2 CALVIN SYNOD HERALD THE RIGHT REVEREND BISHOP ÁRPÁD L. BERETZ 7520 Woodmar Avenue Hammond, Ind. 46323 Tel.: 219-844-8632 Synodical Council Meeting: Our Synodical Council met on Aug. 8-9 in Passaic, N.J. Rev. and Mrs. Joseph Kecskemethy were the gracious hosts. Attending were: Bishop Arpad Beretz; Rev. Joseph Marsalko, General Secretary; Rev. Joseph Kecskemethy, Synod Treasurer, and Dean Francis Vitéz, Editor of the Calvin Synod Herald. Deputy-bishop Aaron Elek was on vacation. Items concerning Synod programing, pastoral and congregational matters, Calvin Synod Herald subsidy, financial questions and the Youth Camp were among the subjects discussed and acted upon. Bethlen Home Representatives: Calvin Synod was represented at the Bethlen Home meeting of the Board of Directors on September 6, 1973 by the following: Dr. John Butosi, Rev. Zoltán Kovács, Dr. Joseph Piri, Dr. Arthur Ludwig and Rev. Louis Becske and Dr. László Berzeviczy our representatives on the Board of Managers. Since Synod nominated one too many for the Board, Mr. John Nemesnyik voluntarily withdrew his name from nomination. Paper Shortage: Our Calvin Synod Herald is faced with a possible paper shortage and in-Official Communications creased cost of publication. Synodical Council considered a proposal by Standard Press by which the cost of production might be held down to a minimum and also assure paper availability. Also of concern is the chronic financial deficit of the paper. Council considered plans to end the deficit and place the paper on a sound and selfsupporting basis. It was emphasized by Editor Vitéz that strong support for the Herald will be needed if publication in the present format is to be continued. Hungarian Bible Study: The 35th Annual Synod Meeting voted to support the publication of the new Hungarian Bible, a completely new translation and the first complete revision since the original Gáspár Karolyi version in 1590. As the first Karolyi Bible was an all Hungarian venture, so it would be most fitting if this new translation could also be an all Hungarian publication. If especially we in America, could supply the money to buy the Bible paper for the first edition, or at least for a part of it, this would make it possible for the new Bible publication in all its aspects, scientific research, translation, graphic arts, paper supply, printing and distribution, to be an All-Hungarian work and project. For many years the Hungarian Bible was the publication of the British and Foreign Bible Society. It would be most appropriate if now the Hungarian Diaspora and Ecumene could join in the publication of the New Hungarian Bible. Our Synodical Council calls upon our congregations to join in celebrating the New Hungarian Bible on December 9, 1973. All monies from the congregations or from individual donors should be sent to the Rev. Joseph Kecskemethy, Synod Treasurer. Fall Meeting: The Fall Meeting of Calvin Synod, Eastern Section was held on Sept. 30- Oct. 1, 1973 in Passaic, N.J. at the Hungarian Reformed Church, the Rev. Joseph Kecskemethy, pastor. The final date for the Western Section Fall Synod Meeting has not yet been set. Dr. Harangi: We are happy to report that Dr. László Harangi, pastor and professor, is on the mend after being stricken in Hungary last July. We hope and pray that his health will be completely restored and that he may continue for a long time his valuable contributions to church and school alike.
