In 1948 he left for the USA, though he delayed his final settlement almost for one year. As the director of the Institute for Muscle Research of Marine Biology in Woods Hole, he enriched the science with further new, highly appreciated research results. From 1970 he joined the political campaign against Nixon’s Vietnam war and wrote several books on the dangers of atomic warfare. As a retaliation, the American Government withdrew the support of his research projects, so he established the organization of “Laboratory free of walls” where 60 scientists of 16 countries worked on cancer research. It was 1973 when he first returned to his home country, and then he was conferred an honorary degree of the Medical School of Szeged. He visited Hungary in 1978 again as a member of the delegation escorting the Hungarian Royal Crown brought home. In 1983 he was rewarded with the Standard Order of the Hungarian People’s Republic decorated with rubies. With his death on 22th October, 1986 we lost the world-famous scientist who was the first Nobel prize winner in Hungary. At the anniversary commemorational conference of Medical School of Szeged held on 15th December 1986, the wish was declared to give the name of Albert Szent-Györgyi to the Medical University. The naming ceremony was held on 10—11th December, 1987. The detailed biographical study is followed by a short communication on the antecedents on the Museum of Medical History of the Medical University at Szeged and on the efforts of the authors in the establishment of the Szent-Györgyi Collection. About half on the volume explores the archives of the Szent-Györgyi Collection. The original copies of some the documents presented in the volume are in the Archives of Csongrád County. The compilation presents some half-a-thousand original documents out of the several thousands either as a whole or as references. The documents of the two major periods, that is the years in Szeged (1928—1948) and those in America (1948—1986) will be published in a separate volume. The documents presented are to complete the biographical study. The illustrations (photos, medals, paintings etc.) depict some pieces of the Szent-Györgyi Collection and of the several hundred photos. The photos from years 1930—1940 were taken by Béla Liebmann. Name and geographical indexes at the end of the volume help the reader in orientation. 344
