Helping Hands Across the Sea Meeting with Rt. Rev. László Horkay, Bishop of the Reformed Church of Sub-Carpathia in Rev. Stephan Torok’s residence in Perth Amboy, New Jersey served a dual purpose. First, it gave us the opportunity on behalf of the Maria Poes Fraternal Day Committee to make a presentation of $3,000 to Bishop Horkay for the purpose of aiding the Hungarian people ravaged by the recent floods and snow. The donation will be distributed equally amongst the Bishops of the Hungarian Roman Catholic, Greek Catholic (Byzantine) and the Reformed Churches to aid their people in the affected flood zones. Bishop Horkay was overwhelmed by our thoughtfulness and generosity. He especially was grateful that we have not lost our consciousness toward our forefathers. L to r.: Director Michael Pauli presenting Bishop László Horkay a $3,000 donation for the flood victims of Sub-Carpathia. Rev. Stefan Torok is on the left next to Bishop Horkay. Secondly, it gave my wife Margaret and me an opportunity to chat with him about the areas of Beregszász. It is very close to Makkosjanosi where my father and his sisters and brothers were bom. He mentioned going through that area and even going to the local churches. Bishop Horkay demonstrated a keen sense of understanding and compassion towards Margaret’s efforts to obtain records from that area. Finally, he looked at us and said “never allow your children and grandchildren to lose their sense of pride in the culture and heritage of the Hungarian people. Bring them together often and relate the stories of our heroic ancestors. Never let them forget”. Michael Pauli, Jr., Director 26
