Dudás The year 1999 in the life of our congregation has been rather busy. In 1998 we started the renovation of our church parlor, which, with the Lord’s help, we managed to finish in April. It was perfect timing for we were the hosts of the 1999 Annual Youth Conference. The title of the conference was “The Armor of God.” The members of our church worked very hard to make this conference a successful one and we feel that our members as well as all the young participants gained a lot from these two days. We did not only try to renew the building, but started to look into finding ways of spiritual renewal. As almost all our sister churches, we are hurting because of the aging membership. We constantly pray to our Lord to show us His plan for us. Since now we have a beautiful, newly renovated kitchen, we started Hungarian cooking classes to attract new people to our church as well as bring back members who have not been coming regularly. In May two of our young members witnessed their faith at their confirmation. It was a heartwarming event, reflecting on the tradition of our church, for one of the confirmands confessed her faith in Hungarian, the other in English. Gabriella Lex and Justin Zakhar took their first communion at Pentecost. Our Harvest Fair, which took place in November, was a success. This is the main fund-raising event of our church, which motivates many of our members to put their hard work into making the Fair a success. The Brotherhood, as usual, took care of the “kolbász and hurka” table, the Women’s Guild was selling delicious stuffed cabbage and kolbász sandwiches, the “Apro Crew” sold hundreds of dozens of cookies, nutand poppy seed rolls, the choir cooked and sold two huge pots of gulyás. Our young ones were present helping, as well as many-many of our members. 78
