The Bethlen Home
Volunteer Roberta Mayer and resident Marie Selling enjoy some sunshine at a picnic at Mammoth Park. Some Views on the Care of the Elderly in Hungary During my last visit in Budapest, I acquired some experience with two institutions: The Apartment Complex for Retired People on Dózsa György ut (A Dózsa György úti Nyugdijasok Háza), close to the Hero’s Square, and the Albert Schweitzer Home, which is owned and managed by the Reformed Churches of Hungary. My mother lives in the retirement complex, which is not church related, but is managed and subsidized by the city of Budapest. When residents are admitted, they have to give up their home, which goes into the “government pool,” and is then calculated as a down payment on the apartment. 41
