On May 3, several of our ladies attended the meeting of Church Women United in Perth Amboy, New Jersey. Sandra Todash was elected president of Church Women United for the 1999 meeting, for which our church will be the host. Megan Scott graduated from Florence High School in June, and is now a student in the Bachelor of Fine Arts program at the College of New Jersey. Megan received numerous awards and scholarships, including the American Legion Award, a $ 1,000 scholarship from the American Hungarian Civic Association, and the $500 Living Tree Endowment scholarship from the Trinity United Methodist Church in Roebling. On June 21, our church held a special Recognition Dinner with a dual purpose. It was an occasion to bid fond farewell to Bert and Jean Somogyi, long-time valued members and leaders of our church, on the occasion of their departure for their new home in Arizona. It was also a time to honor and thank Allan Birkholz for the many ways in which he has served our church, and especially for his twenty years of dedicated leadership as chief elder. 1998 marks our church’s 85th anniversary. We observed the occasion with a special worship service on Sunday, October 25, and a dinner after that. Florence Township Mayor George Sampson presents a commemorative plaque to Rev. Stem and Chief Elder Allan Birkholz at our 85th anniversary service. 108
