In 1996 the Whiting Congregation surprised the minister with a new Hungarian Reformed Robe, which had been hand made in Hungary. Then on the Sunday before Christmas, the entire congregation came to an evening candlelight service in Indiana Harbor, with whom they share a pastor, where Rev. Ludwig was surprised with the Sagamore of the Wabash award, presented by a representative of the Governor. To quote from the letter accompanying the Certificate, “The term Sagamore” was used by the American Indian Tribes of the northeastern United States to describe a lesser chief or a great man among the tribe to whom the true chief would look for wisdom and advice. The award is the highest honor which the Governor of Indiana bestows. It is a personal tribute given to those who have rendered a distinguished service to the State or to the Governor. The congregation felt proud of their minister, who just the previous year had been awarded the Saint Joseph The Worker award by Calumet College of St. Joseph, only the second non-Roman Catholic to receive the award in its 28 years of being the highest honor(s) that Calumet College of St. Joseph can bestow on an individual, awarded to one who has distinction in his or her profession or vocation, who has expressed devotion to community, country and family and who through honest labor, sincerity, humility and reverence, has reflected the life, ideals and virtues of Saint Joseph the Worker. June of 1997 will commemorate the 25th year of Rev. Ludwig’s ordination into the ministry by the Calvin Synod. MINISTERS OF THE CHURCH: 1919-1922 Nt. Virág István 1922-1929 Nt.
