been its ladies; from the start of the construction to the finishing touches, the women made it all possible, while they were rearing their children for the glory of God. Many other important things stand out in our history, but most easily remembered are times of joy or sadness. A time of joy, when in 1974 Cardinal Joseph Mindszenty visited our church upon his release from Hungary, and the 1978 celebration honoring 20 years of service by Rev. Dr. Arthur A. Ludwig. And the two outstanding sad times, the tragic death of Rev. John Szeghy in 1952, and more recently the death of our Rev. Dr. Arthur A. Ludwig, February 24, 1981. Yet the FAITH lives on, and God’s work continues. As part of the Western Classis, our congregation participated in the medical aid for the young lady from Transylvania, and consistently supports other local missions, including the homeless shelters in our area, which are administered by our minister Rev. Koloman Ludwig. To the Indiana Harbor Congregation, Rev. Ludwig is seen not just as a minister but as a friend. It was here that he lived beginning in 1958, it was here that he preached his first sermon as a theology student, it was here that he was ordained in June of 1972, and it was in East Chicago that he was recently recognized for his work with the mentally ill by the Tri City Mental Health with their Judge Morton B. Kanz Award. Following his recognition by Calumet College of St. Joseph with the St. Joseph the Worker award in 1995, the leaders of the Congregation decided that the next award he receives should be in his home church. So when they heard he would receive the Sagamore of the Wabash award, the highest honor which the Governor of Indiana bestows, the Consistory arranged that it be awarded at a pre-Christmas Candlelight Service, to which they secretly invited the sister Whiting Congregation.
