a secret hearing, he was sentenced on Feb. 21, 1952, to four and one-half years of imprisonment and deprived of all his wordly goods — for “anti-state provocation” based primarily on his Magyar Út articles. Freed from Vác prison on May 16, 1956, the Dean of Törökszentmiklós Classis recommended that the Consistory and Pastor of the Karcag Reformed Church make room for him. On Feb. 12, 1957, Dean István Gaal notified Pap that the Security Police (AVH) does not approve of his going to Karcag until he is rehabilitated. Thereupon Pap requested the Consistory to give him leave of absence. As of August 10, 1957, he did not return from his Bakony Forest holiday. Police investigation turned up one shoe, one legbone and a skull, but refrained from calling knowledgeable doctors to testify. On Dec. 11, 1958, the town of Porva issued a death certificate with the notation: “According to Ministry of Interior instructions # 10/955, document taxes have been duly paid.” From the REFORMÁTUSOK LAPJA, dated 9/10/89, Budapest, published by the Reformed Church of Hungary. Excerpted from the Hungarian by Rev. Stephen Sziarto (Lancaster, PA Theological Seminary, BD, 1934): schoolmate and friend of Bela Pap during his school year in Lancaster. A KÁLVÁRIÁRA Kószáltam, jártam a világot, ülök most hűvös fák alatt. Arcomon száraz béke és szívemen, mint bonyolult számok aljában az összegezés: Hűvös, biztos tapasztalat. Tiszta a sor, kész az eredmény. Homlokomat sem törölöm. A hajlongó, hű táj felett elnézem hosszan a keresztény nagy összeadási jelet: a Krisztusét a temetőn. Illyés Gyula 323
