WHEN THE EARTH WAS NEW By: Anikó Szűcs Nuclear weapons, air pollution so bad there’s almost no solution. Stupid wars where no one wins Where did all this wickedness begin We killed the animals for bad reasons The world gets worse with the changing seasons We cut down or burn the forest’s trees I fall down upon my knees To kiss the last of the fertile ground Which now is so hard to be found. High rises and condos are seen, Where nature’s beauty once hath been Now forever lost among the city streets Worried about all defeats Holes in our atmosphere The water is no longer clear Animals dying because of pollution It’s time to make a resolution Factories blow toxic waste into our lungs While the workers hang their coats on the rungs There is so little beauty left here Hold close to your heart the things that are dear. I hold my breath and close my eyes. If people would only realize The pain the world goes through Back when the earth was new People cared for nature, and nature cared for them Little Indian girls with flower stems Holding them high with feelings of pride This world, now so dirty I wish to hide When you kill something it kills you I wish I could remember back when the earth was new. This poem was composed by our Bishop’s younger daughter, the 13-year old Anikó. 133
