132 BETHLEN ALMANAC lightening and burned to the ground... This event shook the congregation, too, but they met the challenge with new faith and determination as they decided to build a new church in a better location. The lot has been already purchased and now they wait only for an ordained pastor to lead them on the road of a promising future. We know they will not wait too long... HAMMOND, Ind. — Student pastor: Mr. Thomas Szigethy After the resignation of Rev. J. Szucs, the present student pastor took charge of this church on September 15, 1958. According to his report, the congregation has advanced in overcoming the depression which occured during the past year. The renewed hope is manifested in the sacrificial work of the organizations; among them the Ladies’ Aid made a contribution of $1,308 to help defray the financial burden of the congregation, and the Women’s Guild gave $591.52 for the same purpose. Improvements were made on the parsonage as they installed a new gas furnace. The Youth Fellowship and the Sunday School has reconvened after a long period of inactivity. Miss Betty Almasy who was the President of the National Youth Cabinet of the Magyar Synod decided to work for the diploma of “Director of Religious Education” at Oberlin College. The Chief Elder is a third generation young man, Mr. Charles Puskas. “Although our achievements art not earth shaking we have the firm hope that our Heavenly Father who saved us from disintegration will help us to rebuild this congregation,” the student pastor confidently concludes. INDIANA HARBOR, Ind. — Pastor: Rev. Dr. Arthur A. Ludwig The present pastor took charge of the congregation on April 1, 1958 and was installed on February 15, 1959. This short period of time was enough for Rev. Ludwig to show his keen interest in the social problems of the vicinity, and even of the nation. As this congregation is his first charge, he tries to materialize here his long cherished dream of pastoral concerns. He was the only Hungarian pastor who participated in the fifth World Order Conference of the National Council of Churches of Christ on November 18-21, 1958. At Ligonier, Penna, he gave an interesting report of his experiences on this conference to the Hungarian Ministerial Association which elected him to be its secretary for the next two years. Consistory, First Hungarian Evangelical and Reformed Church, Indiana Harbor, with Dr. Arthur Ludwig, Pastor.
