BETHLEN NAPTÁR 221 In 1947 he was elected to the pastorate of Cleveland First Church, which is the largest American-Hungarian congregation. Among his most outstanding achievements is the building of the sanctuary at First Church at a cost of $350,000, known as the “Nagy Templom” of Cleveland. Because Cleveland First Church always gave the most substantial support to the Bethlen Home, Dr. Szabó became closely associated with our charitable institution. He served for many years as a member of its Board of Directors, until his election to the Supreme Council in 1956. As author, Dr. Szabó published the following popular books: “In the Footsteps of the Reformers”, and “The March of Truth”, which has been translated into many languages. REV. BERTRAM SATHMARY, born in Szikszó, Hungary, came to Lackawanna, N.Y. at the age of 12. From there the family moved to Beaver Falls, Pa., where Rev. Sathmary continued his schooling as a boy. He entered Bloomfield College, then Bloomfield Seminary, becoming an ordained minister in the Presbyterian Church in 1927. During his fruitful ministry he served the following Hungarian congregations: Elizabeth, N.J.; Leechburg, Pa.; Ashtabula - Conneaut-Erie charges; Gary, Indiana; and Perth Amboy, N.J. (John Calvin). He remained for eight years at “John Calvin.” After serving 27 years in the Hungarian field he became affiliated with the Reformed Church in America, accepting the pastorate of the Dutch Reformed Church of Long Branch, N.J., of which church Garrett A. Hobart Vice President of the United States, and Mary Pickford were members. For the past 30 years Rev. Sathmary has been a member of, and has worked for the Hungarian Reformed Federation. Though he is now serving an American Church he states that no matter where fate may lead him, he will always remain a Magyar and a Református at heart. Rev. Sathmary is a 32nd. degree Mason. He served faithfully on Red Cross as well as Refugee Committees, and during World War II, he sold War Bonds, at which time he was also an active member of the War Bond Committee. A devoted family man, a good singer and violinist, Rev. and Mrs. (Marie Andorko) Sathmary have had a very full and happy life together with their talented children: Magda, Irma, Charlotte, and Bert, Jr. Baseball is Rev. Sathmary’s favorite sport, while fishing and bacon roasts (szalonnasütés) are his chief hobbies. Rev. Bertram Sathmary, Long Branch, N. J.
