January 1 — June 30, 1949 It is my privilege to report to the second generation on the work carried on at the Bethlen Home: the life of our large family in both the children’s and the old folks’ departments, on special events that transpired during the first six months of 1949, on our indispensable farm, as well as on our finances. (The financial report will be found in both languages on pages 51-54) OUR STAFF As in the past, just so during these past six months, in addition to the work of our staff, we needed and greatly ap­preciated the spiritual and financial aid so graciously given to us by the Hungarian Reformed Federation of America, our pas­tors and their congregations, as well as generous individuals. This aid enabled us to carry on better and more effective work among our children and old folks. The elected staff, which includes the superintendent and his wife, as well as the old people’s overseer and his wife, were the individuals who worked untiringly to shoulder all direct responsibility for the welfare of old and young alike, as well as for the many angles of work that go into the maintenance of an institution such as ours. In addition to our elected staff, our employees numbered three at the children’s home, three at the old folks’ home and three at the farm — all tried and true workers, who have been with the Bethlen Home for years. They are people of honesty and integrity, thoroughly reliable and responsible: Mrs. Barbara Gacsályi, Mrs. Joseph Szabó, Mrs. Elizabeth Balog, Mrs. Ida Orosz, Mrs liga Olsen, Mrs. Michael Horváth, Walter Springer, Michael Horváth and Louis Puskás. The superintendent, as head of the large family, the over­seer of the old folks as co-worker, as well as the employees, worked hand-in-hand to fulfill the obligations with which God and our sponsors and supporters entrusted us: to love and nur­ture old and young.
