Erre vonatkozólag fogalmat A BÉRMUNKÁS szervező és lapbizottsága egy újabb füzet­tel lepte meg az amerikai osz­tálytudatos magyar munkássá­got. Ez a füzet régi hiányt kí­ván pótolni “Mi az IWW és mi nem?” Egy igazán szép kivite­lű, könnyen olvasható harminc­két oldalas füzet, amely elejé­től végig vázolja az IWW mi­voltát. Feltárja ama hamis fo­galmakat, amelyek igyekeznek eltompitani az IWW célját, a kapitalista osztály és annak bérenceinek hazug propagandá­ját, az “idegen” származás té­ves fogalmát. Bemutatja, hogy az IWW nem párt vagy politikai szervezet. Foglalkozik mindazokkal a vádakkal, amelyeket a tőkés- osztály valamint a párt politi­kusok az IWW fejlődése és terjeszkedése elé felsorakoztat­nak. Soha magyar nyelven nem jelent meg harminckét oldalas füzet, amely ily gazdag tárhá­zát tartalmazná a munkásosz­tály az ipari bérrabszolgák har­ci eszközének. Ebből a füzetből megösmerheti minden osztálytu­datos munkás az osztályharcot, a tényleges IWW-t. Ezekből 1.700.000 dolgozik ténylegesen a bányákban és körülötte. Eb­ből a számból 800.000 dolgozik lent a bánya mélyében, mint tényleges bányász. A pennsylvaniai szénbányák­ban lerakott vasút hossza több mint az egész állam területén lévő vasutak hálózatai. It is so full of odities and simul­taneous happenings. I had just finished reading Alexander Berkman’s “Prison Memoirs of an Anarchist” when my twelve year old cousin burst into our home with the shout: “Did you hear? Did you read the papers? Berkman is dead!” Her outburst struck me like a thunder bolt. Alexander Berkman dead! It can’t be! I hasten to a nearby news stand to get the latest paper. And there on the first page: “Alex Berkman, Anarch­ist Dead.” Many are those that feel the sorrow of the passing of Sasha Berkman. We may or may not agree with his social philosophy, but we all must admire the courage, the sinc­erity, the personality of Berk- man. Here was a human being who put the cause above all personal desires; here was a being who was revolutionist first and human after. Berkman first attained world­wide publicity when he was a mere youth: twenty years of age. Not much older than most of us Junior Wobblies. Berk- man was a youth with idealism, with a devotion to the cause. When the Homestead strike occured in 1892 and the mur­der of the workers was print­ed in the daily press, Berkman mined that he must avenge the read of it and became deter- murder of his fellow-workers. At least he would point the finger of guilt to the murder­er. Frick, the right hand man of Carnegie was the one respon­sible. It was he that built the high fenced wall around the plant; it was he who hired the Pinkerton’s; it was he who or­dered the workers to be shot down. Such a being had no right to live. Berkman, who loved life and beauty, Berkman who loved the “people” became the executioner for the “people.” Sasha went to Pittsburgh and there sought out Frick and attempted his “attentant.” Most of us do not agree with the practice of killing off indivi­duals, for they only represent the system, and killing an in­dividual will not kill the system. Yet Berkman thought, that by killing this individual he would arouse enough interest and thinking in the. masses that they would soon rise up against their masters. Berkman wounded Frick and was sentenced to twenty years in the penitentiary. He served fourteen and was released.; There he suffered tortures and pains and agonies! He came out of prison a physically in­jured man, but more convinced and determined to work for the Cause. Soon after he wrote that marvelous book called “Prison Memories of an Anarchist.” If you wish to read an interesting book about prison life read Berkman’s Memoirs. The World War was Declar­ed. Berkman with his friend Emma Goldman actively work­ed against it and started an anti-conscription campaign. Mooney, Billings et al are arrested. Berkman is the first to come to their defense. Wherever there was a struggle of the workers, there Sasha was. The US authorities arrest him for anti-war work. He is sentenced to prison and later to deportation to Russia. He serves his prison term and than is deported with Em- ha Goldman and a hundred more to Russia, the Soviet Union. Before he sails from America he tells the press that he will come back to US as the first Soviet ambassador. But Russia proved to Berk- man an illusion. He fought bit­terly against the illusion, but realty is life and Berkman fled from Russia. He was a man without a country. He was a citizen of the world. And that is what he wanted to be! Today a new move is on foot to organize the steel workers. Berkman is no longer among the living to give his willing hand. But the workers of Hom­estead, the workers of every land will forever remember that noble and sublime per­sonality Alexander Sasha Berk- man. We youth, we Junior Wobb­lies’ can take courage and ins­piration from the life of Berk- man. Let us carry on the fight! Let us raise higher our ban­ner ! Let us march on! To a workers’ world! A Works Progress Adminis­tration munkás közoktatási intézmény a “Wodstock” városi könyvtár vezetőségével egye­temben tudományos előadások sorozatát vette tervbe a 761 East 160-ik utcában levő könyv­tárban. Az előadások tárgyai a következők: 1. Psychologia (léleketn.) 2. Az irodalom sze­repe a társadalomban. 3. Ak­tuális munkás problémák. 4. Társadalom tudomány. E tanfolyam célja, hogy meg­ismertesse a munkássággal a mai társadalmi rendszer kiala­kulását, berendezését és a dol­gozók helyzetét a mai társada­lomban. A nyári tanfolyam már kez­detét vette. Előadások minden kedden, szerdán, csütörtökön és pénteken este -tői 9-ig tarta­nak. A társadalom tudományo­kat kívánatra magyar nyelven is ismertetik. Beiratkozások bármely elő­adásra teljesen díjtalanok. Ven­dégeket egyes előadásra is szí­vesen látunk. További felvilá­gosítást készséggel ad a könyv­tár vezetősége, vagy a WPA Schools for Workers 214 East 14th St. osztálya. On Sunday, aug. 9, there will be a PICNIC at Edenwald Park, under auspices of the 330 Branch. Proceeds are for the 120 strike and organiza­tion work.
