Union education

There was a time in labor history, when union organizers w,ere men of the better class who became interested in the workers and their struggles and set themselves forward as the champions of labor, or there were workers who had learned a bitter experience the lesson of organization, and had attempted to teach their fellow workers what they had learned.

The latter were the ones who vere the militant unionists of their day. They w.ere workers themselves, i. e., members of the rank and file.

Today we have different types of labor organizers. The conservative business-men organizers of the AFofL and similar unions, and the militant organizers of the IWW. There is a significant fact in this, and that is that most of the union organizers have been born, raised and educated in the working class. The AFofL organizers have accepted the teachings of the capitalist class educators.

The IWW has a Work Peoples College where the workers may go to learn about the class struggle and the best weapons

to use against the capitalist class in this coming struggle for industries. At this college they can also learn how to conduct union meetings and how to become an organizer for the IWW. It does not take 10 or 15 years to become acquainted with the principles of Industrial Unionism. If you know that craft unionism is an atavism in our peresent day society you are a potential organizer for the IWW.

There is a glaring difference between the AFofL organizer and the IWW organizer. Where one only sees a few feet in front of his face the other looks into the future and offers the workers emancipation. The objective of the IWW is Industrial Democracy. It is a goal of happiness and joy to the Industrial Workers of th( World who have built this fin.e world and intend to use it for themselves.

If there is any spark of manhood and womanhood in the working class at all, then we can be rationally certain of a better world in the making. It will be something for which aur forefathers never dared to hope.

But that’s all changed for scarcely any Articles are sent to Annie.”

“I cannot write for summer’s heat Impairs the mind and swells the feet.”

’Cause even when the mercury soars We‘ve got to patronize the stores.

Our Stomachs still must have their bread And roofs are needed overhead.

In case you say, “I’ve naught to write,”

Consider then your family’s plight.

Perhaps your father’s in a strike Then write of THAT, or, if you like,

Just tell us of some labor news Included with your personal views.

As now this message nears the end,

I’m hoping that this verse will send An inspiration to a friend.

Stepping stones

Some of us are inclined to hate the word capitalism, most of the workingmen regard it as a mislaid stone in the road that leads to Industrial Freedom. Though this hate has been passed on from generation

to generation, man has gone on stumbling over this mislaid stone — not attempting to relay the path by putting a new stone in place of the mislaid one.

There are many types of

stones which can replace the old: for example, Fascism,

Communism, Socialism and last, but not least, Industrial Unionism. The stone of Industrial Unionism is the only stone which will lay the path leading to true democracy.

Through Fascism the workers can gain nothing. Fascism in Italy and Germany only amount to a means of perpetuating capitalism. All liberties ar,e taken away from the workers as soon as Fascism gets its iron grip upon a country.

The introduction of Communism into Russia has only meant the substitution of a few leaders for the ousted Czar. They are now slaves to a party instead of slaves to a Czar.

Voting our way into power as advocated by the Socialists will not be possible. It only amounts to double-crossing. We can gain nothing by trying to capture the capitalist state.

Industrial Unionism is the stone that will enable us to step into a new society. The IWW advocates Industrial Unionism, that is, organizing the working class into One Big Union. Organized into One Big Union the workers are much stronger than they would be if they were organized into various craft unions.

Are we, the youth of the world, going to let this unsatisfactory capitalistic stone remain in our paths? Let us organize into the One Big Union and let no stone other than the IWW one be laid in the path leading to Industrial Freedom.

AZ ERŐSEBB JOGÁN

Kevéssel azután, hogy a vadászok a sebesült tulok üldözésére indultak, a nyugati hegyekből idegen vadászhorda ereszkedett le a völgy felé. Nyolcán voltak, mind férfiak; kissé magasabb homloku, erőteljesebb felsőtestü emberek, kiknek egyike-másika vadbőröket viselt. Messziről jött, zordabb kiimához szokott, hegyvidéki emberek voltak ez.ek, ugyancsak hátrahajló állal és hatalmas szemöldökivekkel, de keményebb tekintettel és egyenesebb testtartással. Fürtös, bozontos hajuk arcukba lógott, villogó szemük nagy vadságot, feszülő izmaik erőt árultak el. Egyik kezében mindegyik jókora ökölkövet, másikban hatalmas fütyköst szorongatott. Vadnemjárta helyeken át, több napi járcföldön, kiéhezett elő- csapata volt ez a horda egy másik, idegen törzsnek, mely' a maga eddigi területén minden vadat kipusztitva, uj vadászterületek keresésére indult. Éppen kiértek az erdőből és a völgy képe a maga teljes pompájában kibontakozott előttük. Vezetőjük, egy tagbaszakadt, sürü, gyapjas szőrrel borított testű, marcona ősember, megállást intett. A csapat meglepett makogást hallatott és tág- ranyilt szemmel meredt le az előtte elterülő völgyre. Kívánatosabb látványt aligha remélhettek volna, az igaz.

Alattuk a vadcsapástól át meg átjárt, erdővel szegélyezett kristályvizü patak, mely lenn, a messze ellátszó hcdgá- tak fölött pompás kis tóvá szélesedik. A viz fenékig átlátsz© és benne messziről villannak a ficánkoló halak. Lenn, a hcdgát alatt lassú csobogással ömlik át a viz és túl, a síkon gyönyörű nádas — a vizet kedvelő nagy vad kedvenc tanyája — terül el. Az ég azúrja kéken tündöklik vissza a viz tükréből, a lágy reggeli fuvallat sejtelmesen susogtatja az erdei lombot. Lenn a nádas fölött vadrécék húznak s a parti égerfák közül éppen most bontakozik ki az óriásgim koronás feje. Nagyott dobban a primitiv vadászok szive, úgy érzik, tudják, látják, hogy ez a völgy a számukra termett, itt van a megváltás, az élet, itt van minden, amire áhítoztak . . .

De egyszerre riadtan kapja fel a fejét a vezér és szótlanul a barlang irányába mutat.

A telep innen födve van ugyan, emberek nem látszanak, de abban az irányban füst száll fel a patak fölött. A horda tüstént megérti a helyzetet. Vad rikoltás tör fel nyolc torokból s az idegenek husángjaikat forgatva, ragadozó állatokként csörtetnek a békés telep felé. Szemük előtt vérbe borul a világ, csak azt látják, hogy amikor végre, annyi fáradtság után alkalmas vadászterületre bukkantak, ott már mások megelőzték őket! A velükszületett, ősi kenyéririgység lángra lobbant s ezt a tüzet már csak vér olthatja el. Még néhány másodperc s a horda förgetegként ront le a lejtőn a félig nyitott barlang felé.
