A vasutak szócsöve a rövidebb munkaidő ellen Junior Column UNIONS CHICAGO, ILL. — A vasúti szakszervezetek tisztviselői a napokban tartották évi konvenciójukat a város egyik előkelő szállodájában, ahol a munkáltatók is tartani szokták konvenciój ukat. Dacára azon ténynek, hogy a “Labor” cimü hivatalos lapjuk takargatni próbálja a vasutaknál állandóan emelkedő munkanélküliséget, a fenti testület által kiadott statisztika azt bizonyítja, hogy a 21 elismert vasúti szakszervezet tagjai közül ma kevesebb van foglalkoztatva a vasutaknál, mint volt bármikor a depressziós évek beálta óta. Két évvel ezelőtt még 993.000 munkást foglalkoztattak a vasutak, mig a jelenben csak 976.000. Nem oly régen a vasúti szakszervezeteknek még 2.000.000 tagja dolgozott a vasúti hálózatokon és műhelyekben. Akkor még nem voltak “efficiency expert”- ek akik nagyösszeget vesznek fel fizetések címen és hivatásuk a forgalmat gyorsítani és munkamegtakaritó készülékek alkalmazása. Ezek között az első helyen áll Joseph B. Eastman a szövetségi kormány képviselője. Eastman megjelent a fenti konvención is és a vasut- bárók nehéz helyzetére hivatkozva méltányosságot kért. Mr. Eastman a leghatározottabban ellenzi a hat órás munkanap bevezetését és arra kéri a munkásokat, hogy “cseresznyéz- zenek egy tálból” a munkáltatókkal. A szakszervezetek élén álló selyem fiukhoz folyamodik, hogy szüntessék be az agitáci- ót a hat órás munka napért, amig — ha egyáltalán — az általános lesz a többi iparokban. Kétségbe van esve a hat órai munkanapért folyó agitáció előhaladottságáért, mert “ez újabb terheket ró a szegény vasutbárókra.” Eastman kötelezettségének egyike volna, több munkaalkalom teremtése a vasutaknál, ez azonban csütörtököt mondott. Furcsa az, hogy a vasúti munkások már két éve szemlélői ezen tehetetlenségnek és még mindig bizalommal vannak ezen bálvány iránt. . E sorok írásakor a szakszervezetek tisztviselői még látszólag a hat órás munkanap mellett vannak és elvetették Eastman óhaját. Kétségtelen azonban, hogy ez csak ámítás, hogy teljesen megnyerj ék _ a tagság bizalmát, mely már ingadozik és csak idő kérdése, hogy valamennyit ott fogjuk látni Eastman és a vasutbárók oldalán. Eastman szintén ellenzi a vonatok hosszúságának korlátozását, valamint, hogy a személyzet minimum 5 ember legyen. A vasutbárók ezen szócsövének határozott szándéka a vasutak konszolidálása és néhány esetben ezt már a gyakorlatba is vitte. A konszolidáció szerint az egy irányba haladó vasútvonalakon a forgalmat olyanformán korlátozni, hogy csak egy vonal legyen használva, a többin a közlekedést beszüntetni, úgyszintén a javító műhelyek és felülvizsgáló állomások mellőzése, úgy hogy rövid időn belül csak egy néhány vasút vonal volna forgalomba az egész ország területén. Elékpzelhető, hogy néhány éven belül hány munkást fognak foglalkoztatni a vasutaknál. Csaléteknek a bevezetendő “nyugdíj” tervezetet emlegeti kárpótlásul a munkásoknak, melyben elbocsájtás esetén részesülnek. Azonban oróbálja bárki ezt megkapni, ha már nem dolgozik ott. Eastman mindent elkövet, hogy a munkások megbízottait megnyerje saját oldalára és ismerve ezen kényelmes irodai székek elfoglalóit, semmi kétségünk az iránt, hogy nekik legkevesebb gondot okoz, hogy hány munkás esik ki a kenyér keresetből, csak ők folytathassák a kényelmes életmódot. Vasúti munkások ne higyje- tek Eastman és vezéreiteknek, akik megváltókként tüntetik fel önmagukat. Szervezkedjetek iparilag az IWW-ba, mely szervezet mutatja az utat a szabadsághoz. Vagy ezt követitek, vagy délibábot követtek, mely ingoványba vezet. Martins Ferryben még nem volt alkalma a magyarságnak olyan társadalmi színdarabot látni mint a milyen most szombaton, január 26-án kerül bemutatásra a Magyar Ház színpadán. MA-HOLNAP a cime ennek a darabnak, amelyet egy amerikai bérmunkás Pika Pál irt, aki évtizedek óta aktiv tagja a munkásmozgalomnak és nyitott szemmel figyeli a társadalmi eseményeket. Ennek a meglátásának eredménye a MA-HOLNAP megírása, amelyet számos magyarok lakta vidéken már bemutattak. A most szombati martins ferry-i bemutatást érdekessé teszi az is, hogy a szereplők ebből a célból jönnek Martins Ferrybe a közel 60 milera levő Pittsburgh, Pa.-ból, ahol néhány héttel ezelőtt játszották le ezt az igazi munkás színdarabot. Ne mulassza el egyetlen magyar család sem, hogy szombaton este a Magyar Házba eljöjjön, mert a MA-HOLNAP amellett, hogy ritka szórakozást nyújt, tanulságos színdarab. A PHILADELPHIAI MODERN SZÍNKÖR február hó 2-án, szombaton este 7:30-kor, 322 W. Girard Ave. tánccal egybekötött MŰSOROS ESTÉLYT rendez. A női munkástársak ízletes kocsonyát fognak felszolgálni. Belépődíj 25 cent. The majority of the working class is still kept in a trance by politics and mislead by fake unions such as the AFofL, the Commuhist Party and a mess of company unions. The AFofL is nothing but a racket union that keeps the working class separated, and disorganized as much as it possibly can. When the NRA was originated, they put into it a section 7-A, which gave the workers the right to organize and to choose their own union. At this time, the bosses began to fear that their slaves might take a hint and organize. Now the racketeers and big shots saw a chance to put their fake union into action by saving the skins of the bosses; putting the ball and chain on the workers by having them sign all sorts of contracts in that union. Also, the officials thought that they might collect a lot of “dough” from the workers by high dues and initiation fees. The next step for them now was to try to make the workers fall for their trick. That was rather easy, due to the fact that the workers wasted their time with politics, all sorts of clubs and recreation and paid no attention to organize themselves into a real labor union. Then in those shops where the workers didn’t want the AFofL (the boss knowing the value of the fake union to him) were threatened with the loss of their jobs. Thus, the AFofL proved very profitable for both the bosses and the union officials. Then we have the company unions. The company unions were started in various shops because the AFofL failed to get around to those shops, etc. and the bosses wanted some protection against outside unions. (At that time the AFofL was in great demand by the bosses.) So you see. the company unions are not for the good of the workers. Now, last but not least of the most wel-known misleaders, the Communist Party. As you know, these “comrats” are pretty well-known for their rioting and demostrating. They are misleading the working class and wasting their time with politics, parading to the city hall and demanding relief from the mayor, their small home and land owners associations and other trash—the latest of all, their unemployment councils, to send delegates to Washington. This class struggle cannot be remedied by the tactics of the AFofL which isn’t its aim in the first place, and likewise for the company unions. So why waste your time with such fake unions. It cannot be remedied by the Communist party and their dogma, or any other such time-wasting actions. The working class of today has wasted too much time with such absolutely dumb ways of trying to achieve success. It is about time for the working class to get down to work and organize themselves into the One Big Union. Into a union that won’t have anything to do with rioting and demonstrating. A union that has nothing to do with politics, and absolutely won’t have a thing to do with contracts. A union that is organizing the INDUSTRIES and not the streets, into a union that uses DIRECT ACTION; into a union by the workers for the workers, that possesses the one and only weapon or remedy for the class struggle — the REVOLUTIONARY GENERAL STRIKE and the STRIKE ON THE JOB. This wonderful organization is the ONE BIG UNION of the IWW the OBU of all the workers regardless of nationality, race or color. The IWW is the ONLY union with which you can hope to achive success. Join the IWW now. Educate yourself with its literature. Subcribe for its paper and get some real labor news from the fellow workers all over the World. You people from Detroit, New York and one or two other towns, You doubtless don’t give a “Continental” for my opinion — no reason why you should — but consider, please, the readers of this column who are anxiously waiting to read what you have to say (and you’d be surprised at the number who do read it) be loyal to them and to the purpose behind it all.
