JWU FELLOW JUNIORS: On a bright Sunday morning, August 26, 1934, seven young Wobblies met at Tarmo Hall for the purpose of formulating plans for the formation of a Junior Wobblies Union Local in this, the city of Sky-scrapers. At this meeting, Fellow Worker Junior Mauritz Erk- kila, and Harry Monkkonen, two youthful students of Work Peoples College, each gave a short but very encouraging talk on why we need a Junior Wobblies Union, and also gave to us in detail what other JWU locals were doing. Fellow Worker Junior Mauritz Erkkila acted as temporary chairman and Fellow Junior Irma Johnson acted as temporary recording Secretary. August 31st: The Juniors again met at Parmo Hall for further developments of this local. We went through the ordinary order of business and at this meeting, Fellow Junior Ernest Bergman was elected chairman for the period of three months and I was elected Secy”.-Treas. for the period of six months. Motion was passed and Committee formed, etc. The Juniors met for the third time Friday, September 7, 1934 at Tarmo Hall. At this meeting, nine juniors were present. We went through the ordinary order of business. The high-light of this meeting was that the yet unofficial constitution of the JWU was read and accepted and an entertainment committee was formed for the coming opening entertainment and dance that is to be sponsored by the Juniors of the Manhattan JWU local at Tarmo Hall, Sat. Sept. 22nd. The Juniors met for the fourth time Friday, September 14, at Tarmo Hall. At this meeting, eight juniors were present. We went through the ordinary order of business. The high lights of this meeting was that we opened floor for discussion on a press committee in order to keep whatever activity the JWU of Man- hatten participated in in the Jr. Columns of all IWW publications and the more important one, that we accept Kiemo Kolm to act as our meditator in this particular job of finding out whether or not a certain fellow-worker, Richard, would act as our instructor for the important high lights of the this JWU has planned. At the meeting of September 21st there were twelve juniors present. We went through the ordinary order of business and the important high lightsof the meeting were as follows: M—S to open floor for discussion on whether or not the juniors wished to start a Jr. Eastern Organ publication. M—S to open floor for discussion on whether or not the juniors wished to form an auxilliary unit to the JWU in the 1 form of a JWU short wave I club. 1 M—S to recall motion stating time the chairman and * Sec.-Treas was to serve and J changing it over to having the * chairman and Sec.-Treas serve for two consecutive meetings ] only, thereby giving a chance 1 for all juniors to learn how to 1 act as chairman and Sec.-Treas. M—S to instruct local Sec. to J order the Jr Recruit for this ; local (C.) Acting chairman: Ernest Bergman. ] Acting Recording Sec’y.: Mary Feczko. Acting Conductor: Maurice West. The Juniors met again Friday, Sept. 23th; all juniors in good standing were present. We went through the ordinary order of business and the high lights of this meeting were as follows: M—S to accept the reading of three applications for new memberships. M—S that we drop matter of having added to our JWU a short wave club until such a time that we would have a suficient membership to tackle such a job. M—S that we drop matter of trying to publish a Jr Eastern Organ publication until such a time that we would have a large enough and experienced enough membership to attempt such a job and to turn our activity in boosting the paper we already have in the field. The Jr. Recruit instead. (Carried.) M—S to jot on JWU Bulletin board the Cleveland JWU business meetings’ minutes (Carried.) M—S to instruct Secy, to send minutes of this and the previous meeting to the Cleveland JWU. (Carried.) M—S that we elect a committee of two to act as the press committee for the Man- hatten JWU. (Carried.) M—S that the Juniors of the Manhatten JWU shall help out in the form of entertainment, the Finnish IWW entertainment, and dance to be held at Masonic Temple, Oct. 27th and 28th. (Carried.) Education is Organization: Boost the Junior Recruit. By building up the JWU. You are also building up the future IWW; support all JWU publications and entertainments and dances. The Manhatten JWU. The entertainment that the Manhatten JWU held Saturday, September 22nd at Tarmo Hall, was a success both financially and numerically. Despite the rain the Hall was well packed. We are safe to say that if it had not rained that night we would have had to turn many would-be patrons away. You can see for yourself whose side old man weather is pulling for. The JWU program was as follows: 1. Opening speech by Fellow Junior, Maurice West: (Subject.) A short History of the JWU. 2. Second number on the program was a group song by the Juniors. We sang the “International.” 3. Third number on the program was a poem recited by Bill Feczko, “We have Fed You All For a Thousand Years.” 4. The fourth number on the program was given by the Manhatten JWU songstress, Irma Palmer, and accompanied by Fellow Junior Irma Johnson on the Mandolin. One of the songs the songstress sang was “The Rebel Girl.” 5. A poem was recited by Fellow Junior Rema Corde/, “Skyscraper.” 6. Ernest Bergman played the mouth organ. “There is Power in A Union” and “The Preacher and The Slave.” 7. A poem written by Fellow Worker Junior, Mauritz Erkkila and recited by Irma Johnson, “The Flower and Youth.” 8. The next number was a short play entitled “The Minister’s Mistake;” enacted by Mary, Marge and Billy Feczko. 9. The Juniors then sang a group song, “The Red Flag.” 10. The closing number was a speech by Ernest Bergman (Subject) The JWU WHY? Maurice West was Master of Ceremonies. The Juniors were distinguished by the red armband they wore and inscribed in white were the letters “JWU.” Dancing took place after the program. It was our first try and very successful despite that mean old weather man, but read the Jr Column of all IWW publications and Stand By for further developments of the Manhatten Juniors.
