1934 március 24. BÉRMUNKÁS 7 oldal “KISMET” Great iron gates clanked shut behind Ned Staren. Ned recalled that this was the second ocassion in his life when the closing of a barrier behind him was sufficiently momentous to warrant a lifetime remembrance. He grinned sardonically, and with a mental reservation that “prison” gates would not again “creak to” on their rusty hinges behind him, he shuffled up the walk and felt the blood rush to his heart at each “freedom step.” To go back. . . Ned was born “across the tracks” but even as a child, he resolved that that appellation would not “dog” his footsteps for long. The shacks had always jarred on his sense of the fitness of things. He had a dream of altering them someday. Ned was an intelligent youngster and unlike most “kids” liked school and stuck to his studies. He finished High School and then “worked his way” through a course in architecture. They were the first gates to close upon him — those University gates. Ned looked back upon those ivy grown walls of his alma matter and thought tenderly of the happy hours spent within that mellowed building. Then, back to his aged parents; to “home, across the tracks.” But a “rising young architect” must need establish himself in a more prosperous looking neighborhood if he expects to make a living. There then, was commenced, the breaking down of a strong moralistic constitution. The weary search — day after day — endless tramping — endless interviews. Hardened employers listened unsympath- ically to his pleas — others didn’t even pay him the courtesy of “lending their ears.” Desperate needs require desperate measures. Hunger and cold drove him to do that for which in better days he himself would have condemned a man. Ned was guilty of confiscating several very valuable volumes on architecture and of then selling them; this procedure, not of course, netting him all he was counting on in the “coin of the realm.” Being guilty of a misdemeanor which was punishable and not having sufficient means to pay the judgment he was very promptly dealt with by the law. However, he had now paid and paid in full; now that he was released he faced the necessity of having again to look for work. One day while anxiously tramping the snow covered streets and feeling grimly amused at the slushing sound made by his sodden shoes, he heard a tinkling sound and turning, saw a horse-drawn sleigh skimming the thoroughfare. “But stay! There was something peculiar about this sleigh. Oh, yes! It was built up — covered. Oh, silly! Nothing odd about that. It was only a farmer taking poultry and supplies to the city people.” “Hold on there! If the country farmer could supply the city dwellers with something; couldn’t he, a city man, think of something the country dwellers lacked which he might very well supply?” “Oh, I’ve got it! A “gem” of an idea. If that farmer has to travel by sleigh then those people are “snowed” in; probably unable to get about for days.” He looked up an old school friend and thought fronds are known to welch when it comes to lending money, this friend of Ned’s was a real man and lent him enough on which to start. It didn’t take long for Ned to get fully equipped and then he started on his new venture. He figured the farmers’ wives could not get to town to buy necessary household and kitchen utensils (and holes in pots and pans don’t wait for Spring) so he, Ned, would take wares to them. For a new venture it was not bad; at least he was eating. The people were becoming accustomed to his visits and welcomed them. He never needed to announce his presence for he was heard for miles around. He had acquired an old rattletrap Ford of ancient vintage and with his stock in trade of pots and pans, etc., and the deep ruts encountered on the roads — well, all in all, the slow moving, noisy contraption was not conducive to quiet. One day he stopped at the top of a steep hill. He entered the farm house with a shiny, new frying pan and a wooden ladle. In the meantime, his Ford which he had dubbed “Lady” decided to try the roads without a guiding hand. The ordinarily refractory breaks obligingly released themselves for “Lady” and down the hill she started to her doom. . . for lurching from side to side she careened madly down that road disregarding jutting rocks; one rear rubber tire gave out with a final shrill cry of despair, but on went “Lady,” notwithstanding. However, this was an unladylike manner in which “Lady” was behaving and must KIS PROLETÁR LÁNYOKNAK Kis lányomhoz: címmel, Verset irt egy költő. . . It did. Disastrously! “Lady” landed in a most undignified heap, not unlike an accordian; right in the broadside of a big red barn. But, oh, those animals in the barn! What a clatter; what din. What neighing, what mooing, cackling and quacking. Amidst the commotion, Ned Staren was humbly apologizing to the roguish farmerette, Nan Summers, for “Lady’s” behavior. Incidentally, thanks to “Lady,” Nan and Ned are now making the rounds of the farm houses together — working out their salvation, together — though the second “Lady” will never experience the thrill of riding without guidance for Nan sits at the controls while Ned “delivers the goods!” A. Zs. COMMENT. Oh, come on Juniors! I know you are all sports and won’t “let down” your column — not without a fight. I’m new at this game but I really am trying my best and if my best isn’t satisfactory — I gladly welcome criticism. Anna Zsamar, Jr. Ed. A DETROITI IWW MAGYAR CSOPORTJA március 24-én, szombaton este 8 órai kezdettel TÁNCESTÉLYT rendez. 914 S. West End Ave. melyre kérjük a munkástársak tömeges megjelenését.
