square near Sáros Bath, which was the starting point of the main routes of communication (the Promontori and Fehérvári main roads, today Budafoki and Bartók Béla Roads respectively). Another plan would introduce here a part of the millenary exhibition. Although this concept remained in blueprint, the bridge named afterthe monarch, Franz Joseph (completed by the millennium, today: Liberty Bridge) greatly contributed to the acceleration of regional development in South-Buda. In 1896, soon afterthe millenary exhibition, "Constantinople in Budapest", an entertainment zone was opened in this area as an enterprise of Károly Somossy with Oriental-style buildings and bridges. To suit the area for the construction of these temporary structures, including the bazaar and a copy of the mosque Hagia Sophia, largescale landscaping was needed combined with partial infilling. Here, in one of the largest entertainment quarter of the capital a wide variety of spectacles, theatre performances, ship-battles, fireworks, etc. awaited visitors. However, the venture failed and went bankrupt in six months: because of the rainy season combined with mosquito raids and the lack of interest, the developer had suffered serious financial losses. The regulation scheme of Lágymányos was most significantly modifed in 1899 when a decision was made to contain the University of Technology here. The site was partly municipal, partly private possession. The municipal part was purchased by the Ministry of General Education at a special price: for 60 Forints per unit (3,6 square metres). The majority of the owners of the private properties signed the purchase agreement with the exception of three people who rejected the Ministry's bid. As a result, they were sued for expropriation so that the state could exercise its eminent domain. The University of Technology was built partly on the expropriated tots, partly on water-covered areas which were gradually banked up. The presence of the university facilitated the development of the neighbouring areas. As private constructions were launched, a whole city quarter mushroomed around it within a short time. The old "riverside dirt-road" was developed as a two-level quay parallel with the eponymous university: it was given the name "University of Technology Quay” on May 18th, 1909, which it has retained ever since.
