and southern facades of the building as well as a turf tennis court ("Lawn tennis"] and even placed two smaller playgrounds between the Library and the Central Building. Hauszmann's plan basically differs from Czigler's, despite the similarity of the basic components of their compositions. Its ground floor plan configuration is akin to that of the Berlin University and the main building of the campus in Strasbourg. Hauszmann calculated a heterogeneous overall appearance for the would-be Campus, as it was the work of three prominent architects. The power of Czigler's design is illustrated by the integral concept of the Campus composed of buildings designed in similar styles, which presupposed an imposing complex designed by the same architects and built in one phase. Hauszmann's building is an independent and integral concept, which deliberately distinguishes itself stylistically from the Library connected to it. Hauszmann relied on the accent of the representative longitudinal axis parallel with the Danube. He st rung a long the diagonal axis perpendicular to the east-west axis defined by the main entrance the staircases and courtyards of the Danube wing and the lecture halls flanked by them. The building features two-two internal courtyards, its northern and southern wings are rounded off by a projection. The wing from the direction of the Library continuing the main entrance axis also ends in two corner projections with a smaller overhang. The latter were accentuated by the turret-like design of the roof in the building permit drawings of 1906, but the working plans by Hauszmann in 1908 already feature corner projections in the giant order pilasters. A DUNAI HOMLOKZAT ENGEDÉLYEZÉSI TERVEN, 1 906 I THE DANUBE FACADE PERMIT PLAN, 1906 The facade of the main building facing the Danube is 200 metre long, the width of the building on the main entrance axis reaches 114 metres. The western wing is 45 m long, and as opposed to the northern and southern wing only surrounds one internal courtyard. The imposing Central Building features a floor size of 1 1.670 m2 defined by its perimeter walls, the usable area of the levels totalled 23.280 m2 on its inauguration, which was extended by appr. 1000 m2 on the 3rd storey of the northern wing. The level height of the basement is 4 m, that of the mezzanine and the first storey 6 m, the second storey 5,5 m. The corridors of the wings with longitudinal walls are 2,7-3 m wide, the spans housing lecture rooms and staff rooms opening from them are 6,85-7 m wide. iimi
