The country hall gave home to this extremely powerful authority. The significance of it was expressed not only with the location of the building but with its size and its ornamentation, as well. A county hall like this was not in every country town because some of them could not afford it. Owing to some local circumstances in Bács-Bodrog County the county hall was built only later. The county’s social and economical developement and the local political fights caused the frequent changing of its extention and the location of the country town. The establishment of the county town had to be restarted for several times by the county management for high expenses parallel with ensuring the administration as usual. It could have been an enormous disadvantage compared to those counties where the headquarter was in the same town, in the same building from the beginnings. The buildings of the former headquarters of Zombor and Baja can still be found and they are significant buildings of the towns. Their significance is showed by a couple of monographys and studies. Nowadays the buildings serve the present society as public institutions. Mrs Márta Kőfalviné Ónodi HISTORY OF THE CONSTRUCTION OF SAINT STEPHEN CHURCH 1808-1880 In the autumn of 2010 there was the 130th anniversary of the dedication of Saint Stephen’s Church. It was also the time of the 125th anniversary of the Presbitery’s establishment. On this particular occassion the study commemorates about the circumstances of the building of the church. The number of the population showed such a quick increase in 1808 that it became necessary to build another Catholic church. The most important thing was to find the money for the building and to arrive at an understanding with the ecclesiastical highest authority concerning the allowances and last but not least to negotiate with the builders. The church was built only on the basis of the town’s own sources with the generous support of the Catholic citizens. The study shows the hard 70 years from the original plans until the dedication of Saint Stephen Church in 1880. 218
