JÓZSEF GYENESEI A VISIT OF A COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF AND ITS LESSON, MIKLÓS HORTY IN KECSKEMÉT One of the most interesting aspects of Miklós Horry's visit in Kecskemét on 7 February 1920 was that it took place in a very critical period of the internal politics. An other was that his coming still was not an official state program at this time because of his unsettled public postion: the leaders of the settlement represented the town at the celebration, but the planning and execution of the reception was carried out by a committee consisting of civilians. The real cause of the visit is still obscure. It can not be clearly stated whether it was a formal answer to the enthusiastic greeting letters of the town residents or a demonstration of continual trust in the officer detachment (which was represented by a visit at the residence of the Héjjas family) that brought him here on the eve of the gubernatorial election. ISTVÁN NAGY THE JEWISH QUESTION IN KECSKEMÉT BETWEEN 1938-1945 Jews had lived in Kecskemét since 1746 and in the following two centuries they gradually obtained a leading role not only in trade but in economy as well, and finally they gained influence in politics too. The execution of the First Jewish Law in Kecskemét had an economic impact first of all. The Law helped the Hangya to rent Benedek' s yard in Kecskemét which was the second largest poultry exporter. There were no really serious effects of the execution of the Law in the city at that time. By the Second Jewish Law the rights of the Jews were gradually curtailed, they lost their elective franchise, they were excluded from administrative committees and viril lists. They lost their wealth step by step. Their lands were compiled in a list and claimed by others soon. Traders were expelled from the markets so they could hardly sell their products and their subsistence was in danger too. Jewish teachers were dismissed from their position. However, Jewish doctors and lawyers were defended by the Chamber as long as it was possible.
