LÁSZLÓ Soós THE DUTIES OF THE STATE-OWNED MIKLÓS VINEYARD AT THE BEGINNING OF THE FIGHT AGAINST PHYLLOXERA The inauguration of the vineyard that was named after Miklós Gyula (who was appointed to commissioner in order to save the Hungarian vine-production) was on 17 September 1884. The estate was established at the border of Kecskemét (in Szarkás field), on a sandy-soiled pasture of 200 cadastral acres and it became the largest state-owned experimental vineyard of the country by the end of 1886. Despite of phylloxera epidemic we managed to save the best types of vines of our winegrowing regions thanks to the gathering and growing of the Hungarian stock of vines and their engraftment into the American specimens. We can also express our thanks to the establishers and managers of the vineyard of Kecskemét because they created the professional conditions of sandy-soiled vine-growing that can provide a living for several generations in the Great Hungarian Plain. PÉTER SOBER THE HISTORY OF THE ROMAN CATHOLIC READING CIRCLE OF BÁTMONOSTOR (1912-1949) The forming and working of this reading circle was a great leap forward in the life of the settlement. An organization was established by its members' free will from almost nothing and the aim of it was to improve morals and promote catholic mentality. Emphasizing Catholic values was dominant part of the reading circle's activity because it was a church society. The number of members in the best years of the society reached even 250-300 which was more than 10 percent of the whole population. The circle's place resembled the tavern of a village in the initial times but as the years passed selfeducation and reading became more and more important and these were supplemented by elements of social life. The whole village was set in motion by programs, gaieties and carnivals of the circle and these events fortified the feeling of togetherness. LÁSZLÓ NÁNÁSI HUNGARIAN PROSECUTION IN THE TIME OF THE REVOLUTIONS OF 1918-1919 The Hungarian Prosecuting Organization (as other elements of bureaucracy) had very hard times as a consequence of the ferquent changing in the balance of power in the short period between the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy
