314 Abstracts of using urban places or not. As both Podmaniczky and Emília Kánya knew Pest-Buda in the 1830s, it is worth comparing their writings with the experience of the next generation, who spent their childhood in the 1850s or 1860s. The unpublished correspondence and diary-like writings of the sons by Júlia Szendrey and Árpád Horvát reveal how boys saw Pest-Buda in their early teens, and what kind of roles some parts of the city had in the lives of bourgeois families. Ágnes Ordasi Occupying the place Strategies of acquiring the Rijeka Delta The history of Fiume (today: Rijeka), the only sea port of the Hungarian Kingdom raises many unexplored questions, for example, the so-called ‘Delta Case’, the battle for the new strip of land, which came into being after the border river, Recina was directed to a new river-bed. The extensive flat land was a perfect place for loading woods, had a special value for the geographically less-favoured Fiume, that strived for expansion, and for the Hungarian government, which wanted to develop its port, at the same time the government of the Viceroy of Croatia did not wish to give the territory up. The conflict went well beyond the level of public administration. The Delta as boundary, as a place for loading woods, as transportation hub and meeting point played an important role not only for the members of the Fiume municipal council, but for tradesmen, businessmen and workers, nevertheless, the conflicts due to the specific context of multicultural environment, issues of public safety, and legal issues raised naturally the question of regional status. Using the sources of the Country Archives of the National Archives of Hungary, Rijeka State Archives and the Collection of Societá degli Studi Fiumani in Rome, I would like to show on which levels the battle for the Delta appeared and what questions it raised. In the study special emphasis is put on describing the interest behind the battle for the territory and the different strategies and methods to occupy the land (large-scale politics in the first place) and also to show the factors why the compromise among the parties could not be realised. Was the Delta-case a substantial issue, that could effectively influence the people’s livelihood or was it just one of the rivalries between the Hungarian and Croatian governments?
