378 Abstracts the city of Pest in order to establish a public garden for the population of the city. His death prevented him from carrying out his humanitarian plan, therefore Witsch could not accomplish the construction, although in his letter dated on 19 October 1799, 4 days before the death of Batthyány, he could report about significant progress to the Cardinal. Despite the incomplete source material, the most important elements of the development by Witsch can be reconstructed, based on his handwritten map. Also, these elements are reflected by one of the (autograph?) drafts, submitted for the 1813 competition. Borbála Mohay The functions of Orczy Garden in the first decades following its foundation Orczy Garden was established in Pest at the end of the 18th century. Commissioned by László Orczy, Berhnard Petri started to design and build the English garden in 1794. In the period the foundation of public parks has just begun, thus the opening of Orczy Garden was particularly important. The population of the city started to “use” and visit it in the first decades after its opening. What did a “pleasant place to walk” mean in the first decades of the 19th century? Who spent their time there, when and how? According to the sources, the garden was a place for solitude and meditation, which related to enjoying the garden as a work of art. In addition, more typically, the garden was used for social life, entertainment and amusement. This is particularly interesting in the period prior to the institutionalisation of social space usage and publicity, which took place in the second half of the 19th century. The research is mainly based on contemporary garden and city descriptions. In addition to the above-mentioned topics, the study deals with the English garden as a political symbol and seeks answers to the question why Orczy opened his garden. Erzsébet Magyar „Promenades, pleasure gardens and people’s parks” Public parks of the Habsburg Monarchy: Private gardens and city parks in the social life of Buda-Pest (-1870-1918) In the last third of the 19th century, the city parks of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy were enriched with several new aspects, beyond their more and more intensive development. The park as green space was eclipsed by buildings, institutions and events of social life of local or national importance.
