598 Abstracts ELEONÓRA KOVÁCS “The Same Thing but in a Different Way.” From a Coronation City to an Episcopal Center. Changes in the Cityscape of the 18th Centurian Székesfehérvár From the year 1543 Székesfehérvár was permanently part of the Ottoman Empire except one year (1601-1602). Székesfehérvár was liberated from the Ottoman Empire in 19th May, 1688, but it did not received back its free royal city (libera regia civitas) status for the next 15 years. During this time the city was governed by the Chamber Administration Office, which depended on the Court Chamber. After a great number of attempts which took several years, Székesfehérvár received back its previous privileges but its influence changed considerably after the Ottoman invastion. Most importantly, Székesfehérvár, a coronation city of the Hungarian Kingdom, was transformed into an episcopal center in the second half of the 18th century. The city lost its former significance because of the wars and the great fire but at the same time new buildings were built in the city in that century. Most of the great construction work were related to the church but these were also supported by the city itself and to a smaller extent by some aristocracy families who had some influence on the the city or on the county. The medieval castle and the fortifications were gradually disappeared because of the destruction and the amortization process. Its remains were used to build houses in the city center. As a result of this construction work - even though the configuration of the city center remained unchanged - the new buildings had different functions and this reflected the new role of the city. That is to say, the medieval Székesfehérvár made a home for royal events, while the 18th century Székesfehérvár made a home for ecclestiactical events and later the city made a home for the ever-growing county (comitatus) events and programs. The purpose of the study is to examine how the changes of the cityscape of the liberated Székesfehérvár reflect the changes in its cue. The study also refers to the social backround of the city, because the former coronation city changed into Stuhl- weissenburg during this time.
