Budapest arms & colours. Throughout the centuries (Budapest, 1998)

Coat of Arms 1966-1989 The fate of the capital's coat of arms after the second world war cannot be accurately traced... but it gradually went out of use. "The escutcheon of 1872 should serve as a basis, to be complemented with all that has happened... for instance the unification of Budapest with several other settlements. It could be indicated in the form of ... maybe a star.... " /Imre Perényi/ "Since we are no heraldists nor any kind of graphic artists, we cannot be expected to tell them how to make it. The designers should be commissioned to adopt the 1872 shape, adding the red star in one form or another... " /István Sarlós/ "The joint representation of the old escutcheon and the red star would aptly convey that the capital includes not only Pest and Buda but also Újpest, Pesterzsébet, Kispest, Csepel, etc.. ." /László Pesta/ "If the Turks could place the turban on top of one bastion, why couldn't we place there the red star?" /János Götz/ "There should be no indication of any of the outer suburbs, because then we would have to indicate all of them. The purpose behind the unification was to create a united Budapest and not to make even our great grandchildren remember the particular towns and villages linked to the capital... let us keep the original 1872 version, with a tasteful addition of a star." /István Sarlós/ /From the minutes of the Executive Committee meetings of the City of Budapest, Feb. 5. /JuneS. 1964./ I. Perényi, L. Pesta, J.Götz: Members of the Executive Committee of the City of Budapest I. Sarlós: Chairman of the Executive Committee of the City of Budapest
