Summary

Numerical data in the Israelitic denomination are taken from the original forms and supporting tables of the population census (n), as the source of the data is unambiguous in this case, it is not referred to. Data on Greek Orthodox (gkel) and Protestant (ref, ev) denominations may originate from different sources by counties or regions, but where only one source is available for one denomination, it is mentioned in the Foreword, and later in the volume the source is not referred to. In the case when data prove only the mere existence of a religious denomination, or it may be presumed only, the number of persons is supplied with two points. 11. Language : Languages spoken in the individual places are mentioned in the Lexicon Locorum (1), by one of the owners' conscription (b), as well as by Korabinsky and Vályi: these sources are, naturally, referred to. The Latin, German and Hungarian denomination of languages can cause ambiguity in certain cases, therefore, if necessary, the original wording of the source is used, with the exception of Hungarian and German data. 12. Serial number: This is the repetition of column 1. Notes (Jegyzetek): In the course of the compilation of the gazetteer interesting reflections or useful completions are often necessary; sometimes the method of treating the data requires some further explanations, or errors experienced in one or another source require notes. These remarks and comments can be found in the Notes arranged according to the order of occurrence in the gazetteer and marked with the original serial number. The cross in brackets (+) after a derived form of a name calls the attention to a note referring to it. Index of place names (Helynévmutató): It helps to locate the names used in the data collection and in the Notes. All forms of names are listed here if the differences of spelling also make differences in pronunciations. These name variations refer to the derived names, where the legal status may be found, as well as the serial number of the item, and - for avoiding repeated turning over the pages - also the mark of the grid number is given. The Index of place names also informs about the present names of the communities and - if any changes happened - about the name of the county to which it belongs now. This Index includes also the names of settlements which belong but now to the county given in the title of the volume, and indicates which county-volume will include their data concerning the end of the lQth century . Index of religious denominations (Felekezeti mutató): The possibility to look up the settlements inhabited by Roman Catholics (római katolikus), Greek Orthodox (görögkeleti), Calvinists (református), Lutherans (evangélikus) and Israelites (izraelita) is rendered by the Index of the individual denominations, where also the legal status, serial number and grid number of the settlements are given. However, the structure varies according to what importance the data of the church administration have, and to the peculiarities of each source. In the case of Roman Catholic Church which has the best structure of administration, the purpose of the Index is to give a clear insight into church administration and affiliation systTir. Affiliations belonging to episcopacies are listed also by dioceses in the alphabetical order of the mother churches (mater), the legal status (2), the serial number (3), grid number (4); moreover the number of Roman Catholic persons (5), as well as the distance - measured in hours - from the mother church (6) are also added. The Calvinist Church (református) was organized in a less firm structure, and the available sources do raise much more problems of source-criticism. This Index provides help in solving these, as it gives a comprehensive list of data of various conscriptions on Calvinist parishioners in each church district in the alphabetical order of the settlements. Thus it makes a better estimation of the contemporary number of parishioners in the settlements missing from certain parish conscriptions. Data retrieval in the manual and on the map is ensured by the legal status (2), serial number (3) and grid number (4) given in this Index. There are no late 18th century conscriptions of settlements which might provide information about the number of the Lutheran parishioners. Therefore the data in this Index contains references of later periods and can serve as the basis of estimation. Data retrieval in the manual and on the map is ensured by the legal status (2), serial number (3) and grid number (4) given in this Index. Index of the owners (Birtokosmutató) is destined to help the work of researchers dealing with estate history by giving an alphabetical list of the owners.
