Beside the hotels and the confectioner shops some small restaurants and pubs can also be found in the book, just as well as the reborn culture of hospitality on Avas hill. The culture of wine cellars has an association on Avas and exhibitions and conferences serve the development of it. Miskolc gave in a project proposal, intending to gain the title of the "Cultural Capital of Europe". As a part of the preparation for that, the downtown has become a protected area including the whole Avas as well. Another part of the preparation was the renovation of at first the fronts of the shops and later the fronts of whole buildings. The renovation plan of down-town blocks is being prepared as well, aiming the complete renewal of whole blocks. Knowing this programme the chapter, that got the title: "Houses of Craftsmen, Merchants and Middle- Class Citizens" has been formed. A very beautiful mansion of nobles was in Hunyadi street, and József Lévay, the poet lived in another one. Printing houses used to work in some buildings, where newspapers and calendars were printed. They used to belong the everyday life of Miskolc so closely, that one could not leave out any of them from the book. A china shop, a musical instrument shop, or an art shop can mirror a part of the atmosphere of the commercial city. There were groceries, department stores, and one of them became very famous. The "Weidlich- palota" (Széchenyi street 19) was built in the beginning of the 19th century and was a centre of spice trade. A unique building like that has to have its place in the book, and all the houses in the main street have their own history, so the only limit before the writer was the sizes of the volumes. Finally there are some topics I did not pay attention to in 1994 or they were not important for some reasons at that time. The city had a few factories in the 20th century, and provided some services as well. The incinerator is a hundred years old in 2006. It was a unique initiative of both generation of energy and environmental protection. The ice factory and the slaughterhouse got energy from the incinerator that used to stand where the centre of the AVE is today. The power supplying and public lighting belong to the EMASZ company today, but its predecessor used to be a company of the city. The continuity in the connection can be seen even today, when at nights the most beautiful buildings of the city get a special flood-light from ÉMÁSZ. The new centre of culture that is being built today is presented in this chapter as well. The "House of Arts" will stand on the north-east side of the medieval market place. The finds of archaeology from that area added new information to the early history of Miskolc. A mill and a slaughterhouse stood in the 19th century on that place. They planned a cinema there in the 20th century, and the 21st brought the idea of a cultural centre that can serve many purposes. An underground car park, a four storey block of flats and a new square is being shaped beside the centre. The new buildings, a part of the complex conception of the renewal of the block, will close the area from the side of the Avas hill and along Szinva stream. The two new volumes of the series of Miskolc in Words and Pictures give us a complex overview of the development of the city, from the beginnings until today. Despite the nine other volumes of the series, the work has to be continued, and new books will be formed from the material of the Archives. The published ma619
