Miskolc in Words and Pictures (Summary) There are two pictures on the desk, one of them was made a hundred years ago, while the other one represents the same topic as we can see today. Generations were bom and died between the two pictures. Are we able to describe the history of this period authentically? This was the basic question that came up a quarter of a century ago. A daily newspaper started a series of articles in Miskolc. Pictures were published and the writings, connected to them, spoke about an episode of the history of our city. Statues and squares, private and public buildings, little shops and big department stores, roads and bridges came in the row as well as the public transport in and outside Miskolc. The number of the topics proved to be inexhaustible. Readers of the newspaper contributed to the popular series with private photographs and stories. The collected material was so rich that it seemed worthwhile to publish the first hundred of the articles in a book too. The first edition of "Miskolc in Words and Pictures" came out of the printing house in 1994, and that became the first book of a series as well. The fact, that in 1995 that volume had to be printed again, shows that the initiative had become popular soon.. The first volume was followed by a new one every year. All of them got published for the Day of Miskolc, 11th May. The row of the books ended with the tenth one in 2003. More than half a thousand topics were covered by the articles with over a thousand photographs, old documents, maps and postcards as illustrations. More than three thousand pages about the history of the city in a readable and popular style. Later the continuation of the series became actual as well as the republishing of the first volume. Instead of an unchanged version of the first book, the editors wanted to extend it with the facts of the development of the last twelve years too. The one volume of 1994 has become two books of articles and pictures this way. The covers of the two volumes mirror what is inside the books. The churches, streets, buildings, and the decorations on them are of the same ones, but a hundred years have passed between them. Most of the articles summarise the change of a hundred year's time. The content can be divided into eight main topics. The first chapter speaks about the city that has developed where the mountains meet the plains. This special location has determined essentially its unique history and development. The ancient habitants of our settlement found shelter and work on the Avas hill seventy thousand years ago and the hill of Avas has become the symbol of the history of Miskolc, preserving many memories of past ages. Beside other monuments, there are three churches (built in different centuries) and also three cemeteries on the hill, showing that different religions lived in peace beside each other in Miskolc. The approximately nine hundred wine-cellars and wine-houses on the hillside speak about that viticulture and wine615
