A visual guide to the history of Miskolc (Summary On the 1st January, 1990 the general assembly of Miskolc town decided to use again the old arms of the town - originally given in 1909 those have been the emblem, the symbol of historical past and traditions of Miskolc. The letters patent granting armorial bearings written on the 11th of May, 1909, is accessible in the Borsod County Archives. This date was the date of gaining the municipal law. The assembly of Miskolc declared that date to be the official Day of the Town, celebrated the first time in 1993. Diploms and awards were given to prominent personalities, a number of performances and programs were held to make the day unforgettable. In 1994 Miskolc celebrated the 85th anniversary of being a municipal authority and held the Day of the Town the second time. To that occassion a book about Miskolc was published: „Miskolc in letters and pictures" written by Stephen Dobrossy. The volume contains a hundred pieces of writing on seven main subjects: public buildings, commercial houses, civil houses, hotels, inns and cafés, school-buildings, churches, and other clerical buildings. Those essays were addressed to everybody, anybody interested in the history of our town, not only to the residents in Miskolc but to the strangers visiting here, too. The whole book is about the architecture of the town giving descriptions of the squares, public statues and monuments offering a good picture of Miskolc, the way of life, the living circumstances both in the 19th and the 20 th centuries. This period was the time of industrialization, the time of the introduction of rail transport and the revolution of urban traffic. In this period became Miskolc a real trade centre. The book is full of photos, drawings, quotations from old periodicals and original documents. The author's main dim was to find the essence of Miskolc, the essence of being a citizen of Miskolc. He wanted to find a mentality that is the characteristic feature of the inhabitants of Miskolc, and only of Miskolc. Perhaps he was rigth when seeking this peculiar essence in the history of the town, in the town-management, in the trade and industry of Miskolc. Possibly the humour of the local people, the reactions of them on the elemental disasters - floods and blazes and colera - can help us to understand this town and the people living here. Because there are some special characteristic signs concerning them. Miskolc is situated at the meeting point of the Alföld - lowlands cultivable - and the Felvidék - highlands known for mining, forestry, wood-working industry - and the town has been developing in this special setting for centuries, turning this position to
