The consequence of the mass demonstration was the arrests in succession and prosecutions of left wing and communist elements. This culminated in 1932 and the actions against Jenő Glattstein (Gömöri), Kanitz etc. are well-known in the labour movement of Miskolc. The demonstration, however, was a watershed as well because the denouncing elements and changecoats, who had contributed to the arrest of leaders of militant left wing workers, also got into the public eye. At the same time the 1st September 1930 was a pregnant manifestation of the social structure and face of the town and its progressive masses of the opposition. DATA TO THE HISTORY OF THE TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY OF HEAVY INDUSTRY Gyula Gáspár Two faculties, the mining and metallurgical ones at the Technical University of Heavy Industry founded in Miskolc in 1949 can trace back their origin to the corresponding two faculties of Academy of Selmecbánya, they are their successors. On the evidence of minute-books of the town council kept in the Archives of County Borsod-Abaúj -Zemplén it can be established that the idea of moving the Academy here had already come up as early as 1905, then in 1918 the Academy applied to the town for the transfer in an official way. The application met with a very warm response and it was only on certain political consideration that the government had finally moved it to Sopron (evidently in order to create the most favourable atmosphere for the plebiscite in Sopron). Even in 1921 the town renewed its application to the government for the sake of moving the Academy here. Thus the idea of founding a new technical university had again come up in the history of the town Miskolc what had at last been realized in 1949. THE EVOLVEMENT OF MUSICAL LIFE IN MISKOLC AFTER THE LIBERATION Mrs. Irén Zalán Varga The paper shows the evolvement of musical life in Miskolc after the liberation, between 1945 and 1948. It is ä continuation of the serial exploring musical life in this town. Apart from its economic, industrial and commercial character, Miskolc has a past of great traditions. Its school of music set up by the town in the first year of our century was known all over the country with highly qualified teachers giving concerts in Europe and with a great number of pupils. After the liberation the surrounding settlements including Diósgyőr-Vasgyár, a vast manufacturing plant with workers living there, were annexed to Miskolc. On this settlement worked the oldest symphonic orchestra in the country and several choirs, too. The paper shows the efforts made by leaders of the town from the first days following liberation for the creation of musical life and its reactivation, respectively. On the other hand it shows the continuousness of musical life in the town. We are given a picture of the struggles, too, for the formation of a Philharmonic Orchestra of high artistic level and for a musical life which could meet the demands of the new society. The paper points out the tonic effect of this almost uniquely big workers’ settlement on the musical life and even on the intellectual level of the town. 295
