century, when a consistorial decision from 1787 reflects the separation of financial powers owned by the village mayor and the church-wardens. The stock-raising by the congregation of Kesznyéten was terminated in 1888, probably referring to modernity. By means of studying various sources concerning stock-raising in parishes, it is in my power to disclose additional material of historico-ethnographical interest to the contemporary peasants’ stock-raising not only in the scope of a village but also in that of a smaller region. A Collection of Experiences by József Balyó from Iványi (1845-1877) Pál Nemesik The smallholder, József Balyó, having one and a half parcels lived in the village Iványi situated in the county Gömör and he was highly esteemed both by his family and his village. He was the chronicler of everyday rustic life. In his collection of experiences he wrote about everything from 1845 on which could be instructive for both himself and his family, and which he felt absolutely necessary for his peasant descendants in order to carry on a successful fight against natural forces and establish a financial basis for the survival and prosperity of the family. After the cross-checks of the information given in his succint statement of an almost documentary form, the way of life of a peasant-family living in the valley Balog and their results in agriculture and animal husbandry will become distinct. Besides giving an account of the work of the family he carefully puts down meteorological data, natural disasters, real tragedies or his fears of disasters to come. His world view, expreiences obtained in the reformed family and congregation, his linkage to the cultural life of the settlement can also be seen. Though he live din a homogeneous community, he was watching and recording the political events of his days (Austrian—Italian—French war, Prussian-French war, Prussian—Austrian war, the Commune of Paris) from a high lighthouse of intellect. We can take an interest in him as a prosaist and a poet, because in both literary forms, besides his intention to document, he had developed his abilities as an autodidact. His other hand-written remains after a hundred years’ rest would also be worth becoming public property. The Organization of Systematic Training of Apprentices in Miskolc after 1872 Mrs Péter Seres The study deals with the history of the school of professional training in Miskolc from 1874, i. e. its being formed, by which time the educational system of lower grade being determined for the following years as well, had been formed. It writes fully of the events of the year 1874, the daily troubles of the school, and analyses the statue laid down by the town. Within the frame of the school-history it outlines the changes in the number of apprentices together with the number-distribution according to industrial branches through comperative data. It writes about the syllabus of 269
