JAKÓ - STEPHEN HÔGYE Documents on celebration of millennium in Abaúj, Borsod and Zemplén counties This third volume of the series „Acta Archivistica” is to give a choice of documents concerning the millennium of the first settlement of the Magyars in Hungary. The authors’s aim is to recall the events of the year 1896 and of the previous years by means of the archives of the then counties, like Abaúj, Borsod and Zemplén and also the most significant towns - Sátoraljaújhely, Sárospatak, Kassa, Szikszó, Miskolc, Szendrő, Mezőkövesd and Mezőcsát - of those days. Besides documents, some parts of the articles from the newspapers of that age are republished as well. These articles are on the celebrations, showing the different happenings - like consecration of the flags, unveiling of statues, ceremonies of buildinghanding over and planting ornamental trees - in the individual towns and villages. The way of thinking, the feelings and emotions of the people of the age are well reflected in all these documents and articles. Among the documents there are some photoes as well. In the year of the millennium a series of 32 post-cards on Hungary was published. These post-cards call up the memory of the great national exhibition, of the newest or best buildings of some Hungarian towns and also of Hungarian historical events. Thereafter several country towns published their own post-cards, too. In this way there are some photoes on our area showing and certifying the newest buildings of the day. This volume contains 55 pieces of documents in different sizes. The authors has made an effort to be really objective in choosing and publishing the documents. The authors strongly believe that these documents - after expiration of even loo years - have got some informative message to the ordinary people of recent times, and to the historians, too. 180
