Summary Ferenc Tegzes „The Benefactor of the Orphans of Pécs". Oszkár Mendlik (1871-1963) The painter renowned all over Europe who had lived since 1901 in the Netherlands and had family ties to Pécs was moved by his conscience to help poor war orphans of Pécs. In 1915 he transferred a sum of 12, 000, in 1916 of 8, 000 and in 1917 of 12, 000 crowns to the mayor of Pécs. He stipulated that the money could exclusively be used to assist the poor war orphans of the city. The committee of the ladies of Pécs assessed the circle of those in need. Afterwards, between 1915 and 1917, combined with Christmas celebrations the city organized the distribution of the gifts bought from the donation. The mayor and the general assembly of the city alike expressed their thanks and gratitude in writing to Oszkár Mendlik for his generosity on every occasion. Contemporary press praised the „good heart" of Oszkár Mendlik several times. His family ties: his grandfather, János Mendlik came to Pécs in 1823 from Nagymaros. As a teacher he became a respected bourgeois of Pécs. His son, Ferenc was born in Pécs in 1838. As a teacher of mathematics he also visited Ungvár. His son was Oszkár, who was born in Radvánc, close to Ungvár on 23rd June 1871. Ágnes Vargháné Szántó The Spanish Flue in the County of Baranya and in Pécs (1918-1919) The Hungarian soldiers encountered the Spanish flue in June 1918 on the Italian front. Thus hundreds of thousands of soldiers hit the road back home to Hungary along with the military defeat thereby bringing the murderous disease among the civilians. As far as its appearance and spread in the county of Baranya is concerned, the malady arose in a number of waves. In summer 1918 an epidemic with mild runoff and flue-like symptoms appeared whereas in autumn, however, numerous cases appeared with grave complications and high mortality rate which second wave had flattened by December. The third, mildest wave burst out in the first months of the year 1919. The aim of this study is the description of the appearance, culmination, and cessation of the pandemic in Baranya and Pécs that was treated by contemporaries as a novelty (viruses had not been discovered yet) along with, on the basis of archival material and local press, the discussion of the estimation of the situation by Pécs authorities as well as their, on many occasions from those of the other county or city authorities differing measures that were taken to handle the epidemic. 289
