Summary (Lengvári István)
Summary Klára T. Mérey Roads and roadside settlements of Baranya County at the first half of the 19th century The book enumerates the entries of the Military Survey of Francis I. (Franzische Aufnahme, often cited as the Second Military Survey, after the first one of Joseph II). The military officers between 1810 and 1812 surveyed all data, which were important for the army. The source includes - among others - the number of houses, population figures, number of accommodation for the army, and the number of animals for catering for each roadside settlement. The precise descriptions are vital sources for historical, demographical, and ethnographic research. The author examines the accuracy of these figures, contrasting them with other archival sources and maps of that age. The figures of the first census (1785) and 1828 are also added to facilitate a wider perspective. The 1828 data are taken from a survey of the matriculae (Cf. Table I and II). The book consists a full database of the available information. The maps outline the postal and other roads of Baranya and South Transdanubia, based on the military survey. The Appendix (by Zsófia Papp) enumerates the settlements of Baranya county, their possessors and district divisions for the 18th-19th centuries. The study not only gives new information for the economic and geographical situation of the county but also explores new fields of research, encouraging local historians.
