Noémi Czeglédi: The Role of Calvinists in the Foundation of Scouting in Hungary

Scouting is the most widely spread movement of youth education based on a religious foundation. The formation of the first scouting groups in Hungary can be linked to institutions and associations which had been engaged in youth education on a religious and social basis before. An example is furnished by the (Protestant) Christian Youth Union of Hungary. The first group was founded by the physician Dr. Aladár Szilassy based on members of the Bible group of the aforementioned Union in 1910. This was the scouting patrol of the Budapest Calvinist Reformed Youth Association. At the time it was re-organized after the Great War this group was allotted the number one. Due to the illness of Szilassy after a year his work was taken over by the Reformed pastor Béla Megyercsy and the candidate in law Gyula Papp. Both had a decisive role in founding the Hungarian Scouting Association (1912) and in the activity and survival of the just unfolding movement during WWI. This is how scouting could become the most essential youth movement after 1920 in Hungary, too.

Noémi Czeglédi: Die Rolle der Reformierten in der Gründung der einheimischen Pfandfinderschaft

Die Pfandfinderschaft ist die meist verbreitete, auf religiösem Fundament beruhende Bewegung der Jugenderziehung. Die Gründung der ersten Pfandfindergruppen Ungarns war an Institute und Vereine geknüpft, die sich bereits vorher mit Jugenderziehung auf religiöser und sozialer Basis beschäftigten. Der Ungarische Christliche Jugendverein war einer unter ihnen. Die erste Gruppe war vom Arzt Dr. Aladár Szilassy aus den Mitgliedern des Bibelkreises des genannten Vereines im Jahre 1910 gegründet. Diese war die Pfandfinderwache des Budapester Reformierten Jugendvereines. Zur Zeit der Neugründung nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg erhielten sie die Nummer eins. Infolge der Krankheit von Szilassy haben der reformierte Pastor Béla Megyercsy und der Rechtskandidat Gyula Papp seine Arbeit übernommen. Beide hatten eine entscheidende Rolle in der Gründung des Ungarischen Pfadfinderbundes (1912) und in der Tätigkeit der sich entfaltenden Bewegung während des Krieges. So konnte sich nach 1920 die Pfadfinderschaft als eine der bedeutendsten Jugendbewegungen bewähren.
