PEASANT MOVEMENTS IN THE DUNÁNTÚL AT THE SPRING AND SUMMER OF 1848 J. Hudi In April 1848 the new Government revoked the feudal system in Hungary. The abolishment of villeinage by law was a major step in the social changes. The seigniory, the hated soke and the manorial court ceased to exist, and was replaced by the equal civil rights. It soon became evident that the changes by law could not result a much better status. Only peasants who earlier had had a fee estate could receive land allotments and thousands of peasant became agricultural hired or seasonal workers. These people, in order to raise their standard of life, first applied to the local governments then tried to protest in violent ways. The peasants did not follow an ideology and their riots were local and isolated. The study illustrates these movements with examples taken from different counties.
