A független magyar külpolitika 1848-1849. Bp., 201-202. DILEMMAS OF COUNT KÁZMÉR BATTHYÁNY (Alternatives of Hungarian Foreign Policy, April-July 1849) M. Füzes During the last stage of the Freedom Fight, after the dethronisation of the Hapsburgs, Governor Kossuth invited count Kázmér Batthyány to be the first Minister of Foreign Affairs. He was a trusted follower of the governor from the Reform Age through the Revolution and the Freedom Fight. Batthyány had no prevoius experience in diplomacy and the invitation was a surprise for him. He had two weeks to think over whether to accept the post, what could be the result of his future work, and what the consequences were to his personal life. Kossuth was convinced that Batthyány was an ardent supporter of the Hungarian independence; but the latter had to think over what reality was. He asked an aid, expert in diplomacy and a member of the Parliament to work out a plan concerning the problem. The result of his paper was that a nation, defending its independence cannot be treated as rebellious. The practical advice was to strengthen ties with England to achieve international recognition and under favourable diplomatic constellations the independence could become reality. Batthyány accepted that view and the position, putting aside his personal aims. Documents dealing with these problems were found at the National Archive of Wien, in the bequest of Sándor Bach, Minister of Internal Affairs. The documents, originally taken from the files of the Hungarian Ministerium of Foreign Affairs of Batthyány, are published here in Hungarian translation.
