DECEMBER 20, 1952 AZ EMBER 5-ik oldal ertész Mihály karácsonyi levele Göndör Ferenchez , ^ Kertész Mihály, a világhírű filmrendező az alábbi baráti levelet irta Göndör • Ferenchez: WARNER BROS. PICTURES INC. WEST COAST STUDIOS ^ Burbank, California, December 9, 19ö2\ Dear Feri, Every Christmas I send you a greeting — but this year j instead of a wire or a card, I would like to write a simple \ letter. Christmas cards are so conventional and even personal wires permit only a limited number of variations. j The messages are used by millions of people, and this year j especially I want to tell you what your friendship has' meant to me. Of course, it will probably be a repetition of j what I’ve said every year before.'lt’s really difficult to express how we feel, because there are many words which are i not in books; they are only in our hearts. My ITTind goes back years ago to the early times when we started out in Hungary, each struggling in his own field — you in journalism, I in the entertainment world. We were young and poor, but idealistic and ambitious to accomplish something creative in life, something worth- j while to be proud of. We were so eager, we didn’t even notice the struggle. And those times meant a great deal to me now in these troubled days. • Then circumstances led us to Austria where the lan• \ guage was a new handicap, which we took in stride, and later Fate gave us the privilege of continuing our work in America. And it wasn’t just you and I; there were many others, too. Others who were brilliant and idealistic. 'Some went away, but a few left. Two particularly, fought their way right to the top — Alexander Korda and Gabriel Pascal. Paul Lukas and Victor Varconi found places on the screen, and the work of many others brought them fame: Gyula Gál, Sándor Goth, Gyula Hegedűs, Arthur Somlay, Jenő Törzs, Ernő Király, Kálmán Rózsahegyi, Irén Varsányi, Ica Lenkeffy, Ella Kertész Góth, Her min Solti, Stefi Sándor, Gábor Rajnai], Márton Rátkay. Directors like Márton Garas, Alfréd Désy, Béla Balogh, Lajos Lázár and writers — Lajos Biró, Sándor Bródy, Menyhért Lengyel and the one and only Ferenc Molnár added luster to the name of Hungary. And now there are new names to contribute prestige to I Hungarians — Imre Kálmán, Joseph Pasternak, Charles Vidor, Zoltán Korda, Andre de Tóth, Steven Székely, John, Auer, Charles Korvin; the charming Ilona Massey and the glamorous Gábor-sisters; the inimitable Szőke Szakáll and the never-ageing Oscar Beregi: mell-known are the three Laszlos: Fodor, Vadnay and Bus-Fekele, then Lajos Zilaliy, Géza Herczeg, Andrew Marton, Steven Bekassy, Steve Geray, Miklós Rózsa and Miklós Brodszky and others I can’t recall at the moment. They all fought hard and gave us reason to be proud of Hungary. We lived in a fantastic world at the beginning of our careers — one which we never could understand. Maybe it was a happier ones Or maybe we were younger and could brace ourselves against the hurts and troubles. But those days have always been encouraging to me, particularly your part in them. Because in alt this time, we have become known to thousands of people, but we have very few friends, and now we know what a real friend is worth, now we can really appreciate his value. In my memory I always see your smiling face, your high strung temperament, your lighting words against whatever you felt was wrong and your tenderness and helping hand for the under-dog. So few such men exist — men who fight for ideals and people without expecting any return, who fight for justice and against human indignities. In that line I knew nothing of politics, I didn’t understand its importance — but 1 do now. Of course many may have said this before, my few humble words are as a drop in the ocean. It would be impossible to praise you beyond what others have. Just page through your Twenty-Fifth Anniversary issue or Christmas’ or New Year’s and you find people from all over the world justly lavishing praise in poetry and eulogizing biographical sketches. The words have all been exhausted and I am only repeating. I just want you to know that your loyalty to your ideals, your tenderness and your big heart — all the goodness God-gave you — have been tike a refuge and a reason to hold to one's faith for all your friends in this confusing and startling new world. Your obstacles and struggles have been in the political and journalistic fields — mine in the entertainment world. Right now so many people in our industry are disheartened and there are predictions even of extinction of our medium. All because of TV. But when 1 remember our early days, 1 know this is one more hill to climb. Of course it’s a challenge — but just to turn out better pictures. Talking pictures didn’t defeat the stage, as so many wise ones predicted, neither will TV eliminate feature pictures to be shown in theatres. It’s an exciting new medium — no doubt of that — and sometimes it’s nice to stay home and see a picture in your living room. But what’s going to happen when everyone’s seen the old movies too many times. TV might out-date radio and news reels on news coverage, but it has its problems, too. As long as Hollywood turns out pictures such as GONE WITH THE WIND, WILSON, WUTHERING HEIGHTS, STAGE COACH, GOING MY WAY, STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE, PLACE IN THE SUN and QUO VADIS TV has a long way to go to catch up. And just when we needed it most — third dimension has been developed — to add interest and excitement to the screen. Just as in the old days, Feri, we’ll beat this problem, loo. I started to write a letter and it turned out to be an editorial. If your readers might be interested, use it. If not, it’s just between the two of us. I know'you have a lot of problems with your Christmas Issue, so I’ll close, but not before wishing you and your family a very Merry Christmas and a New Year of happiness, health and success. Budapesten általános 1 a vélemény, hogy az átszervezés to- I vábbi lépést jelent- a szovjet-rend'szer teljessé tételére. A Szovjetunióban mintegy húsz ú.n. miniszterelnökhelyettes van, akiknek az. a feladatuk, hogy egy-egy minisztert ellenőrizzenek. Most Magyarországon is bevezették a miniszterek feletti hivatalos, spicli-állást. ! j Herendi porcellán a legszebb KARÁCSONYI AJÁNDÉK BARÁTAINAK, ISMERŐSEINEK, SAJÁT MAGÁNAK máyer jános Herendi Muzeum 692 Lexington Avenue New York 22, N.
