Settee number one (53.1404.1), a counter example to the custom of fable illustrations only on the seat, also has an animal story illustration on its back. In fact, several fables seem to be portrayed on the seat as well, which today is severely worn, as a variety of animals are depicted: lion, goat,

frogs and bull (perhaps drawn from ‘The Two Bulls and the Frog’ [Les deux tau- reaux et la grenouille II/4] or ‘The Frog That Wished to Be as Big as the Ox’ [La grenouille qui se veut faire aussi grosse que le boeuf 1/3]). Examples of this practice of depicting fables on both the seat and the
