Zsombor JÉKELY: The Museum of Applied Arts in 2016
Events Art Nouveau World Day 11 June 2016 In June 2016 the Budapest Museum of Applied Arts—along with its Hungarian and international partners—celebrated the 4th Art Nouveau World Day (held on the 10th of June commemorating the death of the two great architects: the Catalan Antoni Gaudí and the Hungarian Ödön Lechner). Related programs on the following Saturday (11th June) were organized in the Museum: special guided tours of the building (not only in Hungarian but in other languages as well) and a series of lectures. Some programs were organized in the honour of the work of the Museum’s second director Jenő Radisics, who founded the basis of the outstanding Art Nouveau collection of the Budapest Museum of Applied Arts by purchases from contemporary exhibitions such as the Paris World Fair of 1900. Thanks to the participation of the Réseau Art Nouveau Network, the World Day reached partners all over Europe. Long Night of the Museums 25 June 2016 Both venues of the Museum of Applied Arts joined the events of the Long Night of the Museums. With the doors open late in the night, the Museum received a record number of visitors. The theme in the main building was connected to the Bikeology exhibition. Behind Closed Doors—Lectures about research at the Museum Monthly event On Mondays, the exhibits are closed, and the building is only accessible for museum staff. The Museum decided to open its doors, however, for one Monday each month, to present a series of lectures about research going on in the Museum. It is our experience that visitors have a lot of questions that only researchers, curators or restorers can answer. This lecture series is created to answer some of these questions. In 2016, already six lectures were held. These are in addition to lecture series organized by the Friends of the Museum, and are open to the general public. Events accompanying the Bikeology exhibition 30 September: No barriers! 9 October: A tapestry and the people depicted on it 6 November: Netherlands! Bikes! Design! A series of lectures, workshops, film screenings and other events were organized in connection with the Bikeology exhibition. Perhaps the biggest event was organized in November together with the Embassy of the Netherlands in Hungary. Among others, Dutch designer Lolo Palazzo (Laurence van Seventer), creator of the Bikeology exhibition’s highlighted work of art, the Drama Queen chandelier held a presentation and a live demonstration of her work.
