the dove of the Holy Spirit enthroned, a reference to the Hetoimasia, that is, the Second Coming of Christ. The object was probably made in one of the Greek-cultured monasteries in the Balkans in the late eighteenth or early nineteenth century. A very similar piece, whose resemblance is close enough even to merit suggestions that it was made by the same hand, is located in the National Archaeological Museum in Sofia.55 Artophorion On the basis of the Greek inscription found on this model of a temple, which was used to preserve the Eucharist, it was made by a monk named Niphon (?), perhaps in the seventeenth century.56 (Fig. 12) The facade of this small church, carved from boxwood, recalls the Late Renaissance churches of Orthodox peoples living under Venetian rule.
