Ildikó PANDUR: A Wrought-Iron Exhibition Hall Gateway from 1883: A Contribution to the Architectural History of the Old Exhibition Hall and the Old Music Academy in Budapest
Harrach, wrote to the directorate of the National Hungarian Association of Fine Arts on 24 September 1896 which included the remark: “The directorate of the Museum of Applied Arts promised to hand over the rooms by 15 September, but they are still in the process of moving. The two rooms already vacated have been empty for days, yet they have not made a start on painting the walls, and the sign for the Museum of Applied Arts still hangs above the entrance. All this is, for us, a major inconvenience, because to completely refurbish all three rooms, to clean, paint and furnish them, and to relocate the 8000 items in the collection of the Music Academy, as well as the director’s office, will involve much time and work. We would have liked to arrange all this during the holiday period, and indeed this should all have been done then.” 50 Erroneous Roman numerals are engraved on the so- called Gundel centrepiece (Museum of Applied Arts, inv. no. 63.558). The attempt to decipher the number, long a source of puzzlement, led to the object being more precisely identified. Ács 1996, p. 14. Ács 1996, p. 54. Museum of Applied Arts, Archive, 1896/63.
