Béla KELÉNYI: 'May It Shine like the Sun and Moon!' Consecration Texts from a Tibetan Stüpa

má 5. Paper ribbon containingone of the Vive Cmz/Dhäranis', /Ai Vimalosnïsa dhärani the HÜM syllable to be written on the heart the mantra 'OM Vajra-life SVAHA' (S.: om vajra-dyuse svähä) should be placed, under the syllable SVÄ to be written on the navel the 'short' Vimalosnïsa dhärani and PratJtyasamutpäda dhärani should be located, and under the syllable HÄ to be written on the 'secret place' (loin) the mantra 'OM The Truly Firm Vajra SVÄHÄ' (S.: om snpratisthavajraye svähä) should be positioned. Above the syllable written above the navel the 'long' Usnlsavijayä dhärani should be placed, behind it the Guhyadhätu dhärani, and on the left side of it the Bodhyalarikäralaksa dhärani? 1 This explains why in the texts of the following scrolls the Five Great Dhdranis do not feature together. On the edge of the next two-line scroll was written the expression 'Five Great DhärarüV (T.: g^ung eben sde Ingd)?" 1 at the beginning of the top and bottom lines. However, the text that follows here is only one of them, the Vimalosnïsa dhäranif together with a mantra to be written for the 'secret place'. The text of the upper line is the same as that of the lower; two of these scrolls, also, have survived (ill. 5). 'om namas traiyadhivTikänäm / sarvatathägatabrdiiyagarhhe / jva la jvala / dharm{a}dhätugarbhe I sambhara mama äyuh samsodh{ajya mama sarvapäpam sarvatatbâgat {ajsamantosnisavimale visuddhe hüm hüm hüm hüm / om vam sam jah svähä lom sarvatatbâgat (a } usnisadbdtumu {d}räni I sarvatatbâgat {a} dharm {a} dinitttvibhüs {i} te adhis{th}ite hum hu{r}u hüm hüm svähä / om supratisthavajraye svähä / 'OM Veneration to the Buddhas of the three times. The Heart Receptacle of all the Tathägatas. Shine, shine. The Dharma-relic Receptacle. Maintain my life, purify all my misdeeds, The Spotiess One of a Complete Head-crest of all the Tathägatas. The Purified One HÜM HÜM HÜM HÜM. OM VAM SAM JAH SVÄHÄ. OM The Gestures of the Head-crest Relic of all the Tathägatas. The One Ornamented by the Dharma-relic of all the Tathägatas, The Empowered One HURU HURU HÜM HÜM SVÄHÄ. OM The Truly Firm Vajra SVÄHÄ.] 36 In the four-part Sanskrit text of the next twoline scroll can be found certain portions from the other of the Five Great Dhdranis? Its first two units belong to the Usnlsavijayä dhärani?* and its third, fourth and fifth units to the Bodhyalarikäralaksa dhärani? 9 its sixth unit, however, is the mantra to be written on the heart centre. From die seventh unit it continues with die PratJtyasamutpäda dhärani?' which is repeated twice. 'om bhrum svähä j om amrtayurdade svähä / om sarvatatbâgat {a }vy {a jvalokite svähä / jay a jay a svähä I om hunt hunt jayamukhe svähä / om vajräyuse svähä / ye dharma hetuprabhavä hetum tesäm tathägato hy avadat / tesäm ca yo nirodha evamvädi mahäsramanah (I)ye dharmä hetuprabhavä hetum tesäm tathägato hy avadat / tesäm cayo nirodha evamvädi mahäsramanah' [OM BHRUM SVÄHÄ. Whatever things arise from a cause, the Tathägata has explained their cause and their cessation, too. This is the Great Ascetic's teaching.] 41
