tion of it. The characteristic feature of the technique is that the wooden body is undercoated, and then covered with black and red lacquer layers; as rule, the uppermost layer is red. Monika Bincsik DEPARTMENT OF TEXTILES Embroidered table-cloth Ottoman Turkish late 17 ,h century - early 18 ,h century Silk and metal thread on linen 290 x 135 cm Inv. no. 2005.81.1. A table-cloth stitched up from three widths of linen. Silver-gilt and silver thread and metal thread (klaptan) (the latter winded on green and pink silk core) on raw linen cambric. Double darning stich. The embroidered decoration is made up of similarly positioned flower-bushes that bend to the left and are slightly shifted by the line. The hem is framed with a line of chain stitches. The pink cotton atlas lining is a posterior addition. To our present knowledge, it is the only Turkish embroidery in our collection that verifiably comes from a Transylvanian aristocratic family. Apart from some minor tears and stains, the condition of the table-cloth is excellent. Provenance: Transylvania, Teleki family Purchased from: Félicie de Gérando-Teleki Emese Pásztor V
