Szilágyi András (szerk.): Ars Decorativa 21. (Budapest, 2002)
New acquisitions
On account of the inscription, the year and the depiction of the imperial insignia, this artefact ranks as an important work of art. It is the first German faience beaker of its kind in our collection. Purchased from a private collection in Budapest Inv. no.: 2001.8.1. Soup tureen with cover © Stomfa, 1816 Marked. On the bottom the contracted initials ST are painted in blue over the glaze. Faience, colourfully painted Height with cover: 20 cm; diameter of rim: 27 cm The tureen and cover together take the shape of a flattened sphere girded round with double ribbing. On the rims there is simple, blue border ornamentation recalling Wiener Ranfil embellishment; the handle of the cover is a sculpted apple with two leaves. Art works made in the Stomfa manufactory are rather rare in Hungarian faience collections. Earlier the Museum had no Stomfa soup tureen, although the manufactory produced tableware for the most part. On the vessel, which is in Late Classicist taste, can be seen the initials of the person who DEPARTMENT OF TEXTILES ordered it - JG or CSG (?) -, with a trader's crest. It is a rare and happy coincidence that the Museum has two platters from the very same service (inv. nos. 15852 and 20778) with identical painting, customer's initials, and year: 1816. With the purchase of the tureen these were able to grow into a fully datable group of pieces capable of being exhibited and well representative of forms and embellishment.
