NEW ACQUISITIONS DEPARTMENT OF TEXTILES Parasol St. Petersburg, 1880s Shaft: 76 cm, sticks: 28 cm, diameter of the parasol: 76 cm The top of the ivory shaft, the handle and the ends of the sticks are embellished with cobalt­blue enamel set in pure gold. The fabric is silk taft; the edge is framed by a Valenciennes-type lace border made from linen thread. Purchased from Mrs. András Mikola, Buda­pest. Family lore has it that the parasol was given to the seller's grandmother, Olga Vorseva Mas­lovskaya (1880-1939), by her godmother, Maria Alexandrovna. The last-mentioned lady was the consort of Tsar Alexander II and a descendant of the princely House of Hesse. Olga's grandmother was a lady-in-waiting to the tsarina. Inv. no. 2000.44.1.
