Katalin Abaházi, 1990 Handpainted calfskin, appliqué work consisting of the complete skins of four snakes Width: 80 cm; height: 41 cm Katalin Abaházi belongs to the group of artists who were the first to receive Lajos Kozma Scholarships. This giant snake bag was the last work of her scholarship period, and was made as a kind of summing up, as a "masterwork" taking account of the noble traditions of craftsmanship, yet at the same time conveying personal ideas. As it later turned out, this piece marked the end of a period in the artist's work. The composition building on the astonishing decorative effect of the prepared snake's heads, the gold and silver paint, and the unusual dimensions makes this a special work, one with a monumentálisul seldom encountered in its genre. This piece was tacitly yet clearly made as a museum art work, and has found a fitting home in the Museum of Applied Arts. Purchased from the artist with money secured throuth competition from the National Cultural Found, 1997. Inv. No.: 97.136.1
