Calendar of events 1993

CALENDAR OF EVENTS 1993 The year 1993 was that of guest exhibitions. The Museum of Applied Arts and the Hopp Ferenc Museum of Eastern Asiatic Art aim to provide for Hungarian visitors an outlook on collections of foreign museums, works of contemporary artists (both foreign and Hungarian), and private collections, as well as presenting their own. Last year 10 major exhibitions were held in the two museums, of which only two exhibited the museums' own collections - the rest were guest shows. The first showed the oeuvre of glass-designer Júlia Báthory, from its beginnings in 1927 to the present. The exhibition was opened by György Fekete, Deputy State Secretary of the Ministry of Culture and Public Education, and could be seen from 15 April to 29 August. The material was collected by Vera Varga, mainly from the artist's own works; the rest was borrowed from collections owned by the Church, individuals and museums all over the country. She was also the author of the brochure richly illustrated with photos. Uwe Loesch's poster show, the ,,Space Time and the Point" , arranged by Magda Lichner was sponsored by the Goethe Institute. For the World Museum Day Eva Békési compiled a smallscale exhibition from our own collection, entitled The Sacral Art of the Nationalities in Hungary. The show Marketing at the Turn of the Century was opened on 15 June, on the occasion of the Quality Week, by József Kandiké, chairman of the Hungarian Marketing Association, compiled by Aliz Torday and Piroska Acs from the material of the Documentation Department of the museum, and was initiated and backed up by the OMFB (National Committee for Technical Development). Brice d'Antras, who several years ago organized an exhibition in the Academy of Applied Arts, has chosen a collection, French Designers Today, that toured several capitals of Europe, including Prague, Vienna, Berlin and Budapest. The show, which was on for two months, was directed by Agnes Prékopa, and was opened on 5 November by His Excellency François Nicoullaud, France's Ambassador to Hungary. The accompanying colour leaflet in French was provided by the Budapest French Institute, and was translated by Agnes Prékopa. The linked programme, an open informal talk of home experts in design, took place in December. From 25 November to 10 Januray, 1994 a Zsuzsanna Lovay directed exhibition from the Thonet Vienna collection could be seen, which was opened by Dr. János Latorcai, Minister of Industry and Commerce, on the occasion of the return of the firm's products into circulation in Hungary, after many years. Crèches built from old building blocks, and devotional pictures embellished with embroidery celebrated Chistmas at the museum, both exhibitions were directed by Agnes Prékopa. At our 21 December Christmas Concert, the Budapest Youth Choir sang motets. A series of exhibitions, the monthly re-
